Troy Deeney says he ‘definitely’ thinks ‘maverick’ Man City star could sign for Tottenham

There could be plenty of comings and goings at Manchester City this summer, and there could be some big money City signings leaving the Etihad too.

Manchester City have certainly spent their share of money in the past: sometimes it’s been money well spent and other times that hasn’t been the case.

This summer, it might be time for Pep Guardiola to cash in on some of City’s big money signings and also some of the club’s big earners who just aren’t cutting it at the highest level any more.

This 2024/25 season has certainly shone a light on some of City’s ageing players and one unfortunate who falls into that category, and who could be on the move in the summer, is Jack Grealish.

Thomas Tuchel left Grealish out of the England squad for this month’s international break amid what’s been a rather terrible season for the 29-year-old, who’ll be turning 30 soon after the start of next season.

Although not as old as some, the ‘maverick‘ that is Grealish certainly isn’t among the club’s young anymore, and he’s simply been out of form, with his huge Man City wages perhaps better spent on a couple of other players who might benefit the team more so.

Troy Deeney backs Jack Grealish to leave Manchester City this summer

Speaking on talkSPORT, pundit Troy Deeney has been discussing Grealish’s form at City this season. Recently, Ben Jacobs discussed the possibility of Grealish joining Arsenal in the summer transfer window, and now Deeney has suggested their North London rivals Spurs might be a better fit for the former Aston Villa talisman.

Deeney said: “I think Pep Guardiola’s one of the best coaches we’ve ever seen. [But] I don’t think he’s handled the Jack Grealish/Kevin De Bruyne situation very well this year, at all. I think he’s kind of just left them in the cold.

“He [Grealish] will have to leave and I think he won’t be short of suitors. But I think now it’s a massive situation for him to find that right situation. He may have to lower his expectations in terms of wages and where he’s playing, but you could definitely see him going somewhere like Spurs, playing week in week out.”

Jack Grealish doesn’t want to leave Manchester City

Man City broke their transfer record to sign Grealish from Aston Villa in a £100million deal 2021. He signed a six-year contract at the Etihad meaning he still has another two years left on his current deal.

This coming summer then might be the best time for City to cash in and not take as much of a hit on that £100million fee as they might do in another year or so. But Manchester City News has recently been informed that Grealish is happy to stay at the club, though the club is willing to sell him this summer.

Like Deeney says, Grealish would need to take a huge pay cut to move pretty much anywhere else, and City would need to expect likewise with no club bound to come anywhere near that £100million fee.

Somewhere like Spurs though where he’d play every week could be exactly what Grealish needs to get back on form, and back to his best.
