Manchester City have numerous players who know what it’s like to play at an international level.
Looking back over the 2024 European Championship in the summer, City had more players (14) selected to feature in the tournament than any other Premier League side.
In fact, four of those players made it to the final, as Rodri’s Spain beat England, which had Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden in the team, 1-0 to win the competition.
More recently, several players from City’s squad have been involved in the recent rounds of the Nations League.
Now though, following the latest bunch of Nations League fixtures, one of City’s most experienced players found himself on the end of a significant gesture from his country’s supporters.
Germany fans commemorate Ilkay Gundogan
Back in August, Ilkay Gundogan announced his retirement from international football after captaining Germany in the Euros.
Prior to their recent 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the Nations League, Gundogan – as well as Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos – was commemorated with a giant banner in the Allianz Arena thanking him for his efforts during his international career.
A video posted on the Optus Sport YouTube channel highlighted this gesture made by the Germany fans.
Gundogan’s record for Germany
Following the midfielder’s return to the Etihad Stadium from Barcelona in the summer, Darren Bent dubbed City’s signing of Gundogan as one of the best transfers of the window.
Having made his senior debut for the German national team back in 2011, Gundogan went on to rack up 82 caps for his country in all competitions.
Across those games, the midfielder bagged 19 goals and delivered nine assists, featuring in multiple tournaments along the way.
During October’s international break, it was reported that Gundogan was training with City’s U21s to help keep fit and impressing the players and coaches around him in doing so.
Now that the 33-year-old has been commemorated in such a special way by the German fans, this highlights how much they appreciate what he did for the national team during his international career.
