Julian Alvarez has insisted he and Erling Haaland have shown they can play together at Manchester City.

The Argentine has been speaking about his fellow striker in the November edition of the club’s digital magazine.

Alvarez and Haaland signed for City at the same time. The Norwegian superstar’s arrival kind of meant more of a low-key start to life at the Etihad for Alvarez. And he did spend a lot of 2022/23 playing second fiddle to him.

But this term, Alvarez – who has recently been linked with Real Madrid – has been heavily involved for City and has been one of the club’s best players this season.

He’s been the man Pep has turned to in the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne.

That has allowed City fans to watch Alvarez and Haaland play in the same team. The partnership has certainly been blossoming, and Alvarez has been speaking about linking up with the former Borussia Dortmund man…

£14 million star Alvarez has recently been operating in an advanced midfield position.

The tendency for Pep Guardiola in recent weeks has been for Alvarez and Phil Foden to play as roaming eights, although Alvarez has been getting into the box to support Haaland more.

At times it feels like an out-and-out strike partnership.

And the pair have looked pretty good together. Alvarez’s goal against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League was really well worked between the two of them.

Speaking about playing with Haaland, Alvarez said: “There has been a lot of speculation about if we can play together or not.

“We have shown this season that we can do it. In fact, the previous season, too. Whenever we have played together, we have scored goals and contributed with assists between us. I am happy for what he has achieved.”

Alvarez and Haaland partnership has the potential to be deadly

The signs over the Alvarez and Haaland partnership are very promising indeed.

Alvarez is right, the pair have definitely shown that they can play together. So far since they both signed, they have combined for six goals for City. Haaland has assisted Alvarez twice, while Alvarez has assisted Haaland four times.

Considering they actually haven’t played together too often, those are some promising numbers.

What will be interesting is how this partnership will look once Kevin De Bruyne is back fit again. That likely won’t be for another couple of months, but it might be something that stops Alvarez from playing quite as much.

But Pep adores Alvarez and has regularly showered praise on him this season. He would surely be pained to reduce him to a rotation role given the season he’s had so far.
