What Atletico Madrid now think about signing Julian Alvarez from Manchester City

A report has revealed how Atletico Madrid internally feel about potentially signing Julian Alvarez.

In June, it was reported that Diego Simeone’s side are interested in Alvarez’s signature.

During the same month, it was revealed that Rodrigo De Paul and Nahuel Molina told the Manchester City striker that Atletico Madrid intend to sign him.

Soon after, it was also claimed by Fabrizio Romano that if Alvarez informs City he wishes to leave and the club receive a big offer is only when the club will be open to his sale. As far as natural strikers go, Samu Omorodion is Atletico Madrid’s only option.

Atletico Madrid deem Julian Alvarez asking price from Man City too high

The likes of Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann can deputise in the role.

However, with Memphis Depay having left the club, the Spanish giants are quite light in that position.

With La Liga’s heavyweights having a history of having world-class strikers at their disposal like Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan and Diego Costa, it would be no surprise for them to be frustrated at a lack of top-quality on their books in that role.

But The Athletic has revealed that Manchester City have asked Atletico Madrid to pay an initial fee of €70 million (£59 million) followed by €20 million (£16.7 million) in add-ons if they aim to sign Alvarez.

While the report states Atleti are interested in signing the World Cup winner, they deem the fee worth £75.7 million in total as being far too excessive.

Man City should be delighted that Atletico Madrid could back out out Alvarez pursuit

Considering Atletico Madrid do not intend to pay such a sum for Alvarez, Manchester City should be delighted.

City’s number 19 remains an integral squad member and even if the Sky Blues banked a sizable £75.7 million from his departure to the Spanish capital, it seems unlikely that they will be to sign many better backup strikers than him.

Alvarez has scored 19 and 17 goals in all competitions in his two seasons at the Etihad Stadium; impressive figures for a player who rarely ever plays in his natural position up front.

As he develops over time at the club, the Argentine has the potential to become a world-class number nine one day.
