What Pep Guardiola actually thought of Jadon Sancho before 2017 Manchester City exit

Manchester City academy graduate Jadon Sancho has sealed a return to Borussia Dortmund on loan – with Pep Guardiola’s true thoughts on the winger now emerging.

It was Martin Samuel of The Times who made the comments when speaking on The Game Football Podcast.

So, what was said about Pep Guardiola and Jadon Sancho? Let’s take a look…

What Guardiola thought of Sancho

Well, the general narrative is that the England international upset the 52-year-old after going back on his agreement to sign a new contract.

That consequently saw Guardiola leave Sancho out of Manchester City’s pre-season tour of the United States, with many under the impression that the Spaniard was happy to wash his hands of the forward, even more so after he failed to show up for future training sessions, as detailed by the Telegraph.

Now – however – that narrative has been squashed.

Samuel said: “It is a myth that Pep Guardiola didn’t care if he left. He very much cared whether he left. They tried to keep Jadon Sancho. Pep Guardiola thought Jadon Sancho had first team potential, so the talent is certainly there.”

The Camberwell-born winger eventually sealed an £8m move to Borussia Dortmund in 2017, where his career took off with 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 appearances.

Sancho – who Erling Haaland recently called a “proper baller” – then secured a £73m return to Manchester, albeit with United rather than City, before things turned sour under Erik ten Hag this season.

Manchester City actually made more than £8m from Sancho sale

Manchester City smartly included a 15% sell-on clause when selling Sancho to Borussia Dortmund.

That meant Guardiola’s side received an extra £9.7m when the Londoner made his £73m move to Manchester United – according to the Telegraph.

It is a shame how things turned out for Sancho at the Etihad Stadium after his emergence from the City Football Academy, and hopefully, he can rebuild his career back on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
