Rio Ferdinand was shocked to discover Scott Carson was classed as one of the most crucial players at Manchester City by Pep Guardiola himself.

For Sky Blues supporters, this is not a surprise to hear, as Guardiola himself once compared Carson’s leadership abilities to Fernandinho’s.

While there was seemingly a hint of jest in Jack Grealish’s reaction to the 37-year-old recent’s contract signing as he branded it as the ‘best news ever’, it shows how well-liked he is in the dressing room.

However, Rio Ferdinand has disclosed that he stunned to find out how highly Pep Guardiola holds Scott Carson in his regard when in conversation with him once.

“Scott Carson’s one of the most important members of his squad. I was like, ‘what?’ He said, ‘name two or three.’ I was naming the obvious names like [Kevin] De Bruyne, these guys. He’s like, Scott Carson. English, understands what’s needed every day, the standards and not afraid to tell people. Love that.”

“I was sitting there thinking, ‘bloody hell.’ I’m standing there probably thinking before that, ‘how’s Scott Carson still nicking contracts at his age?’ But, phenomenal.”
