Why are Manchester City and RB Leipzig wearing black armbands in the UEFA Champions League? Many have been asking on Google.

Pep Guardiola’s side take on the Bundesliga outfit in Matchday Two of the UEFA Champions League inside the Red Bull Arena, as the Citizens look to maintain their 100% record in Group G.

Why Manchester City and RB Leipzig are wearing black armbands today

Well, the treble winners and RB Leipzig are wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for Francis Lee.

The Manchester City legend sadly passed away on Monday at the age of 79 following a battle with cancer.

Ruben Dias was seen wearing a black armband during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday too as the Portugal international paid his respects to Lee.

Guardiola also arranged for a moment of silence to be observed in training on Tuesday morning, to remember the man who made 330 appearances for Manchester City – scoring 148 goals.

Lee became Chairman and Majority Shareholder of Manchester City in 1994 after setting up a successful toilet roll business following the end of his playing career, which made him a millionaire.

Manchester City signed Lee from Bolton Wanderers back in 1967 in a £60,000 deal – he went down as one of the best signings in the club’s history, and ensured his name was etched into the history books after many years of exceptional service to the Citizens.

Guardiola was asked about the Manchester City icon in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, the Spaniard said: “(He is) part of what we are. We are here (because of) people like Franny Lee, Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell, part of the generation that created a part of this organisation, this club… to his wife and all the family, a huge hug.”
