Why San Diego FC are ‘optimistic’ about signing Man City star Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne’s future will potentially be the subject of speculation for several months.

The Belgian is out of contract next summer and nobody really knows what will happen with him at this stage. It’s very possible that he himself doesn’t know, either.

De Bruyne has struggled for fitness this term, which has cast doubt on him extending his current deal.

But everyone knows what he is capable of when he is fully fit, and many fans would love to think he has maybe one more season in him at the Etihad Stadium.

But one report has emerged tonight suggesting that De Bruyne is more likely to be moving on rather than staying put – and there is one significant reason for that.

It has been reported by Give Me Sport that San Diego FC are ‘optimistic’ about signing Kevin De Bruyne, who will have to take a significant salary cut to extend at City.

De Bruyne is thought to be the highest earner in the Premier League on around £400,000 per week.

But he would be required to play for less money if he wanted to extend. De Bruyne is said to be ‘seriously considering heading to Snapdragon Stadium for a fresh challenge’.

It has been claimed previously that San Diego would be willing to offer De Bruyne an annual salary of £15 million to tempt him.

De Bruyne was a target for Al-Ittihad in the 2024 summer window, and the Saudi Pro League is likely to come calling again as they seek to lure big names.

A move to Saudi probably can’t be ruled out. It was claimed that De Bruyne was left very impressed by the money on offer from Al-Ittihad.

De Bruyne decision won’t be known for a while

City fans will have to be patient with the De Bruyne situation because there is still a lot that can happen between now and the end of the season.

De Bruyne’s fitness issues have limited him to just seven matches so far this season and if these struggles for the player continue into 2025, then he may put the wheels in motion to leave.

The Premier League is intense and De Bruyne’s high-octane style over the years appears to now be catching up with him. He may very well fancy playing in a lower-intensity league.

Kevin De Bruyne stats for Man City (2016-present)
Appearances – 390
Goals – 103
Assists – 171
Trophies won – 18

De Bruyne, who’s been hailed as ‘world-class’ by Gary Neville, has nothing left to prove at City. He’s won it all and established himself as one of the all-time great players in the league. He’s right up there with Thierry Henry, and will almost certainly get a statue at the Etihad Stadium in the future.

Few could really blame him for leaving next year if he’s faced with a big pay-cut, when he could earn lucratively elsewhere in a warmer climate.
