A claim has been made that Manchester City midfielder Rodri is a serious contender in the race to win the Ballon d’Or.

This comes from Radio MARCA about the £62.8 million (The Independent) man who also won the Nation League’s Player of the Tournament after winning the competition with Spain.

However, it seems that Rodri is also a candidate to win the Ballon d’Or after what has been a special season from him.

Rodri is firmly in the race to win the Ballon d’Or

There is a strong case to be made that after Erling Haaland, the 26-year-old has been City’s best player in a campaign where they won the treble.

Having been flawless throughout the season whilst coming up clutch in the biggest moments against the likes of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, especially in the Champions League final, many have even backed him to take the award home.

Those that are hoping and praying that Rodri wins the Ballon d’Or would be glad to discover that he is certainly in contention to do so, with presenter Pablo Parra saying on Radio MARCA, “Rodrigo Hernandez is today, the best midfielder in the world.”

“Rodri, without a doubt, is a footballer that no one should be surprised to find is in the race to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Rodri certainly merits being in the race

In all fairness, the likes of Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi seem like the favourites to win the accolade and understandably so.

But to deny that the Spanish international at least deserves a spot on the podium to win the Ballon d’Or would be a case of underplaying his phenomenal season.

In fact, one could even claim that in terms of at club level, only Erling Haaland has really outplayed the midfield maestro, while cases can be made for Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones as well perhaps.
