£130k-a-week Man City player today risks making the same mistake Kalvin Phillips made

Manchester City are not expected to be very busy on transfer deadline day.

The club have made two signings this summer; Savinho came in from Troyes for £33 million earlier in the window, and then fans were left delighted when Ilkay Gundogan made a sensational return.

Only a couple of sales have been made of players who were in last season’s first-team.

Julian Alvarez left to join Atletico Madrid, and before that, Sergio Gomez returned to Spain to play for Real Sociedad.

The Gundogan free transfer was something that elated the City fans. It all happened very quickly, and supporters can’t wait to see him in action this season. He has, of course, already made his second debut, coming on in the second-half against Ipswich Town.

But Gundogan’s return is not good news for Matheus Nunes, who may have a lot to consider today on transfer deadline day.

Matheus Nunes has to consider contacting his agent to facilitate Man City exit

Nunes joined City on transfer deadline day last summer, and it was a move that had some scratching their heads.

City had already landed Mateo Kovacic, a player who is not so dissimilar to Nunes.

But the £53 million transfer was sanctioned, and Nunes has made just 31 appearances for City, with many of these appearances coming as a substitute.

Nunes has shown flashes of his quality. But he has not done enough to threaten to become a regular starter.

Following the arrival of Gundogan, it is going to be even harder for him to play regularly at City. Which is why he must now consider contacting his agent to try and secure an exit today.

It’s been reported that Nunes intends to stay and try to become a success at the Etihad. But this could well prove to be an oversight, like it did for Kalvin Phillips.

Apparently, Nunes wants to stay and try and make a success of his City move.

But it’s really hard to see where his minutes will come from this season.

Last summer, Kalvin Phillips took the same stance. He wanted to stay at the club and fight for his place, which was admirable, but ultimately a foolish move.

There had been zero evidence that Pep was going to turn to Phillips more than he had been doing.

There is little evidence now to suggest Pep will call on £130,000-a-week star Nunes more than he has been doing. And now, Gundogan has returned and Rico Lewis has also been operating high up the pitch and in midfield.

Nunes was linked with a loan move to Atletico Madrid recently, which would be a great move for him. But those links appear to have died down.

Pep won’t force the player out and City could well do with another body in the squad in case of injuries. But it would be a surprise if Nunes did not at least have a look at what moves could be out there for him.
