£38m Man City signing from 2011 would cost £166.7m in today’s money, but amazingly, still entirely worth it

Sergio Aguero may well be the best value-for-money signing in the history of Manchester City.

The Citizens paid Atletico Madrid £38m to sign the Argentine back in July 2011 – after he scored 101 goals in 234 appearances for the Spanish giants – a record fee for Manchester City at the time.

Remarkably, the South American wasted little time in dazzling for his new side, scoring two goals and setting David Silva up for another to inspire Manchester City to a 4-0 win over Swansea on his Premier League debut.

Seeing as Sergio Aguero was signed almost 15 years ago, that £38m fee has increased substantially due to inflation, but quite incredibly, it would still prove value for money.

How much Sergio Aguero would cost in 2025

Had Manchester City moved to sign the man born in Quilmes today, he would have cost them £166.7m due to inflation.

That seems an accurate figure, when you consider the likes of Alexander Isak have a £150m price tag at the moment.

Of course, a sum of £166.7m is a huge amount of money, and would be the second-largest fee in football history behind PSG’s £200m signing of Neymar, but incredibly, still worth the money for Manchester City.

Aguero, who Les Ferdinand prefers to Erling Haaland, ended his Manchester City career with 260 goals in 390 appearances – along with 64 assists – winning five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, six League Cups and three FA Community Shields.

The Argentine worked his way to becoming Manchester City’s record goalscorer – where he still sits today – so with that in mind, and his trophy haul, you couldn’t ask much more from a £166.7m signing.

What is Sergio Aguero doing now?

After sadly being forced to retire at the age of 33 due to cardiac arrhythmia in 2021, Aguero – who called Pep Guardiola “strict” – joined Gerard Pique’s Kings League in November 2022 as chairman of his own side, Kunisports.

The Manchester City legend also streams himself playing various games on Twitch – where he has collaborated with Lionel Messi.

Most recently, Aguero has delved into racing, and took part in Formula E at the wheel of a Porsche 99X earlier this year.
