Sheffield United striker Ben Brereton Diaz believes Ederson Moraes is one of the best South American players to have ever graced the Premier League.

The £35 million (BBC Sport) man has been one of the best goalkeepers in the game since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium, with Petr Cech recently claiming he is one of the three best players in his position in the world.

The Manchester City number one seems to command respect from former and active players, with Jude Bellingham also hailing him as a “top goalie.”

The 30-year-old has been a staple member of Pep Guardiola’s side since his move to the Sky Blues in 2017, despite Stefan Ortega also pushing him for a starting berth since signing for the club last season.

Having won every single trophy at City during his seven-year spell, it would be fair to consider the Brazilian international as a club legend.

When Ben Brereton Diaz was quizzed about the greatest South American player to have played in the Premier League, he named Ederson alongside ex-Arsenal and Manchester United winger Alexis Sanchez.

“That’s a tough one ever because I’m still quite young but like you said, Ederson, what a great ‘keeper he is. For Brazil, he’s really good. Also, there are a few Chileans, Alexis Sanchez being in the Premier League, so he’s up there for me as well”, he told Sky Sports in an interview.

Ederson is certainly up there

Apart from Ederson, Manchester City have other candidates such as Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Pablo Zabaleta that Ben Brereton Diaz could have also named.

But the treble-winner is certainly up there, with Micah Richards claiming in November that the Premier League has not had a goalkeeper of his mould in its history.

Ederson’s outstanding distribution coupled with his brilliant shotstopping ability and remarkable consistency puts him in a conversation amongst the greatest goalkeepers English football has ever seen.

If the decorated shotstopper continues to make history at City, only time will tell whether he is unanimously regarded as the undisputed best South American player to have ever played in the Premier League.
