Craig Burley has said he has yet to see Matheus Nunes have a good game for Manchester City, after the club beat Everton 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

City went top of the league briefly with the win, before Liverpool beat Burnley later in the day.

A double from Erling Haaland was the difference, as Everton made life difficult for City for two-thirds of the contest.

It took the introduction of Kevin De Bruyne as a substitute in the second-half to tip the balance. After Erling Haaland had opened the scoring, De Bruyne then played in the striker to seal the win.

De Bruyne replaced Matheus Nunes who has come in for a bit of criticism for his performance – and Burnley has made quite a harsh claim about the Portugal international…

Burley was speaking about City’s latest result in a new video for ESPN FC when he made his comments about Nunes.

The 25-year-old was picked to start by Pep Guardiola alongside Rodri in midfield, but it wasn’t a particularly impactful display.

Nunes was hooked for De Bruyne, and it has to be said, the former Wolves man may struggle to start City’s next game against Copenhagen.

Burley was unimpressed by Nunes, saying of the midfielder: “I don’t think… I’ve not seen Matheus Nunes have a good game yet.

“I know they wanted (Lucas) Paqueta from West Ham, and Nunes was the guy they got because the Paqueta deal fell apart for various reasons, but I’ve not seen Nunes having a game off, every time he plays for City he gets dragged off.”

Very harsh

This is a pretty harsh comment from Burley about Nunes, who has had a handful of good games since he came to the club last summer.

Sure, he probably hasn’t yet convinced the masses. But has definitely had a few strong outings for City such as against Burnley in the Premier League recently and against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, after which Paul Dickov called him ‘outstanding’.

Nunes is still finding his feet at the Etihad. It’s tricky for him, with so many top quality players in his position.

But the 25-year-old had a decent start, and will surely improve over time as he spends more time under Guardiola.
