Edwin van der Sar’s status as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Premier League history is unquestionable.
The Manchester United legend was one of the first names on Sir Alex Ferguson’s team sheets.
The Dutchman won four Premier League titles as well as the Champions League amongst various other trophies during his time at Old Trafford.
The 54-year-old was also a part of the legendary Ajax team that won Europe’s elite competition in 1995 while lifting the Eredivisie four times.
Similarly, Ederson Moraes’ CV, influence and consistency has been of the highest order for several years.
The Manchester City number one is either already seen or seems set to go down as a Premier League legend.
| MATCHES | CLEAN SHEETS | |
| EDERSON | 313 | 114 |
| EDWIN VAN DER SAR | 261 | 132 |
Ederson (114) is 19 clean sheets away from surpassing the former Fulham number one’s tally of 132 in the league.

Edwin van der Sar names Ederson as one of the best in the world
Ben Foster raved about Ederson in December last year and claimed he “changed the game” for goalkeepers as he epitomises the modern-day iteration of the role.
Sam Johnstone joked Ederson “ruined” goalkeeping for orthodox-style shotstoppers due to how tremendous he is with the ball at his feet. Last Wednesday, it was reported Hugo Viana’s priority is to extend Ederson’s contract beyond 2026 at City — with the decorated goalkeeper having yet another brilliant season.
Edwin van der Sar is an admirer of the Brazilian international as well — naming him amongst the best goalkeepers in the world currently on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel.
“I’ve always admired Manuel Neuer and of course, he’s coming towards, maybe not the end of his career but I like him. Of course, [Gianluigi] Donnarumma did a lot of nice things, I like a footballing goalkeeper. Ederson, I like from City, Alisson [Becker], I like the way he composes himself, he’s quiet.”
Sam Allardyce made a surprising claim about Ederson by going as far as to state that he is Manchester City’s best passer.
However, the former Bolton Wanderers boss’ statement typifies how revered the six-time Premier League winner is.
Peter Schmeichel said Ederson is the Premier League’s best goalkeeper
Another iconic Manchester City goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel sang Ederson’s praises by naming him as the standout player in the Premier League in his position.
“Ederson. For sure, yeah.”
Schmeichel added that where Ederson pips Alisson as a goalkeeper is due to being better and less error-prone in possession.
“I think Alisson is fantastic in terms of one on ones and making really big saves, he’s fantastic.”
“I think Alisson struggles a little bit with his feet. I think there’s a few mistakes that he would make that you don’t see from Ederson. That’s the only thing.”
Ederson commands respect from legends of the game and he will be delighted to be given such high praise by goalkeeping stalwarts.
