Erling Haaland now the second player in Premier League history to do one thing, Man Utd legend is the other

Erling Haaland is rapidly on his way to becoming the greatest striker the Premier League has ever seen. He’s already hit the 20 goal mark for the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Erling Haaland is once again a shining light for Man City, despite what’s been a very tough season so far for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Cityzens are in 4th place of the Premier League table despite having claimed a fourth-straight title last season, as leaders Liverpool sit on a 20-point cushion to the reigning champions.

In their previous outing before the win over Spurs on Wednesday night, Man City lost 2-0 against Liverpool at the Etihad. City looked leggy and old in the game, highlighting the need for what’s billed as a huge summer rebuild at the club.

It’s understood that Man City will make drastic changes to the playing squad in the summer with some experienced, long-serving names set to leave the club including John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne among others.

But Haaland will surely stay, and Guardiola will look to build a team around the Norwegian hitman.

Erling Haaland goal for Man City vs Spurs makes Premier League history

Haaland got on the scoresheet against Spurs after just 12 minutes of the game, converting with a deft touch after a low cross into the box from Jeremy Doku. The 24-year-old Haaland now has 20 goals in 26 Premier League games this season, and a staggering 117 in 133 total games for City.

In the Premier League, Haaland has 83 goals in 92 games with Manchester City. And after the game against Spurs, Haaland has scored at least 20 Premier League goals in each of his three season with the club, following his 2022 move from Borussia Dortmund.

In fact, Haaland is now just the second player in Premier League history to have scored 20+ goals in each of his first three seasons in the Premier League. The first and only other player to do so was Ruud van Nistelrooy with Manchester United, between the 2001/02 and 2003/04 seasons.

Erling Haaland backed to smash Alan Shearer’s Premier League goals record

Alan Shearer boasts the record for most goals in the Premier League, at 260. Harry Kane is in 2nd with 213. And on the trajectory that Haaland is on right now, he’d smash Shearer’s record if he sticks around for long enough.

Speaking earlier in the season, Darren Bent backed Haaland to break the Premier League goals record, saying: “With Shearer’s [record], that’s about longevity. If he’s here for 10 years, he breaks that easily.”

There’s certainly no doubting Haaland’s ability to break the record and to possibly set a new record that might never be broken. But like Bent says, it’s about longevity.

With City struggling and Haaland remaining prolific, he could be snapped up by a team who is hitting the high note on the European stage; a Real Madrid perhaps.

But right now, Haaland is keeping City’s hopes of Champions League qualification for next season alive. Up next for Guardiola’s side is a home game against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup on Saturday.
