Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has started the 2024/25 season in top form.
Starting all three of City’s league games against Chelsea, Ipswich Town and West Ham United, the striker has bagged seven goals.
With 69 Premier League games now under his belt, Haaland has now scored 70 goals, winning the Golden Boot in both of his two completed league campaigns.
After seeing the 24-year-old score his eighth top-flight hat-trick for Pep Guardiola’s side in their recent 3-1 win over West Ham, a pundit and former Premier League striker has made a claim about one significant thing the City star could go on to do.
Darren Bent assesses Erling Haaland’s chances of breaking Alan Shearer’s goal record
When asked on talkSPORT (3/9 4:57 PM) if Haaland can break Alan Shearer’s goal record at some point in the future or break his own Premier League goal record this season, Darren Bent had this to say in response.
He said: “I think this season he could, I mean he’s off to a great start, by the way, to break his own record.
“With Shearer’s [record], that’s about longevity. If he’s here for 10 years, he breaks that easily.”
Haaland could have another record-breaking season at City
Bent isn’t the only pundit and former top-flight striker to back the City star to do something impressive this season, as Ian Wright recently suggested that Haaland could become the first player to score six goals in one league game.
In his first season at City, the Norwegian found the back of the net 36 times in 35 league games, breaking multiple records in the process.
Having scored seven goals in his first three league games of the new season, it’s easy to see why Bent thinks the striker can score more than 36 goals this time around.
In terms of beating Shearer’s record of 260 league goals, which the Englishman bagged in 441 top-flight appearances, it’ll be interesting to see how many goals Haaland will have if he goes on to feature in the same number of matches.
