Fabrizio Romano says £30m player is more likely to join Man Utd than Man City

This summer is said to be a key one for the future of Manchester City.

Having won four Premier League titles in a row last season, the current English champions rested on their laurels last summer, leaving Pep Guardiola with an ageing squad that has struggled throughout the 2024/25 campaign as they currently fight for Champions League football.

This is a big drop off from previous seasons under Guardiola, but it could be a key one going forward as it has forced the Manchester club to look at their squad and maybe even the legendary coach to look at his own ways of doing things.

Man City are very likely to bring in some high-quality additions this summer and Fabrizio Romano has stated that one potential option is more likely to move to Man United this summer, rather than return to the Etihad Stadium.

Man City have no plans to sign Liam Delap

The January transfer window was an uncharacteristically busy one for Man City as Guardiola saw Omar Marmoush added to his squad, in addition to Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov.

Ahead of the summer window, Liam Delap has been a name linked to Man City as the Premier League champions have a buy-back clause in his Ipswich Town contract after the striker left Manchester for the Tractor Boys last summer, which is now valued at £30m.

However, City are not expected to make a move for the English forward this summer, with Man United and Chelsea being viewed as the frontrunners for the 22-year-old, Fabrizio Romano has told GIVEMESPORT.

“Also, Man City have a specific clause for Delap,” Romano said. “But what I’m hearing is that City are not planning to make any investment, of course, after signing Marmoush in the January window and they have Erling Haaland. So the idea is Chelsea or Man United, there is also interest from Germany, it’s true.”

Man City have their main target set out ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window and given the funds needed to sign the player, the Manchester club will need to be smart when it comes to adding new players to their squad for the 2025/26 campaign.

The summer targets of Manchester City

With Kevin De Bruyne set to leave Man City at the end of the season, Guardiola has his eyes on Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz to replace the Belgian superstar, but signing the German this summer could set the Manchester club back £130m.

That is a lot to pay out for just one player as City have other areas that need addressing, such as left-back, with Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso seen as the top target for the role.

Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White has also been linked with a move to Man City as Guardiola looks to strengthen his midfield, which could leave the Manchester club looking a lot different when next season gets underway.
