Gary Neville says he’s genuinely ‘sad’ about what’s happening with one Man City player

The upcoming months are set to be key to the future of Man City.

Pep Guardiola’s side have experienced a tough season having won four Premier League titles prior to the 2024/25 campaign, as City are currently in a fight for a place in next season’s Champions League with the Manchester club currently sitting in third position.

That was given a big boost this week as Matheus Nunes scored a late winner against Aston Villa to put Man City in a great position to achieve their goals.

Outside of the pitch, Guardiola’s squad needs a refresh and ahead of the summer transfer window, Gary Neville has stated that he is ‘sad’ to see what is happening to one player at the Etihad Stadium.

Gary Neville thinks Kevin De Bruyne could have done more to stay at Man City

It is well-known by now that Kevin De Bruyne is leaving Man City with the midfielder recently stating that the Premier League champions never offered him a new deal.

Jamie Carragher understands why Man City do not want to keep De Bruyne, however, his Sky Sports colleague, Neville, thinks it is ‘sad’ what is happening to the Belgian superstar as the Man United legend feels more could have been done to keep the 33-year-old at the Etihad Stadium.

“I get sad. I feel like he’s got two options at his age,” Neville said on Stick To Football. “He either goes and plays 40 odd games somewhere else and plays all the time, or he can play still at that same level, 30/35 games a season, and be an experienced player at City for the next two or three years.

“I don’t quite understand why we’ve got to a point now, I know that you (Carragher) didn’t want to carry on playing, and maybe I don’t know why a player can’t go from being great to then saying ‘right, I’m going to contribute and still do 30/35 games a season and the club doesn’t see that either'”.

This is an approach many of Man City’s current stars could take and they could take a leaf out of the book of one of their teammates.

Man City stars could learn from Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan returned to Man City last summer from Barcelona and was most likely expecting to play in fewer games than his previous stint with the Manchester club. Due to City’s struggles, the German has featured in 45 games, but that is expected to drop for the 2025/26 campaign.

Man City have been linked to Florian Wirtz, while Morgan Gibbs-White is a player Guardiola likes, and should they both arrive, Gundogan’s minutes will be reduced.

The 34-year-old is more than likely aware of this, yet Gundogan is keen to remain at Man City beyond this summer as he knows he can still contribute here and there.

With the futures of some older stars such as Bernardo Silva up in the air, this is an approach they should also consider; however, big offers and more minutes could lure them away.
