Hugo Viana still chasing £64m star despite La Liga player now being Man City’s first choice

Man City are set to make a change to their goalkeeper position ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The role is one Pep Guardiola has not had to worry about for eight years, as Ederson has been a mainstay at the Etihad Stadium since joining from Benfica in 2017.

The Brazilian’s time in Manchester is set to come to an end this summer as Ederson looks set to move to the Saudi Pro League, as several clubs are showing interest in the 31-year-old.

Should the goalkeeper leave in the coming weeks, Man City will need to sign a replacement, and it is being reported that the Premier League giants are still interested in a £64m target, despite him not being their number one option anymore.

Man City are still keen on Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa

It was reported in April that Diogo Costa has agreed to join Man City this summer, as the Porto star is very interested in becoming the next goalkeeper of the Manchester club.

The two clubs never reached an agreement on a transfer fee, as the 25-year-old has a £64m release clause in his current Porto contract.

According to Xavi Espinosa, Man City are still pursuing Costa; however, their main priority is Espanyol’s Joan Garcia.

Man City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, is said to be talking with both goalkeepers, with Garcia yet to make a decision on his future, with several other clubs interested in the La Liga shot-stopper.

Garcia is one of the most exciting goalkeepers in Spain and is not expected to cost Man City as much as Costa, although the Premier League club are trying to sign the Porto star for less.

However, the Portuguese goalkeeper is someone Viana knows well from his time in Portugal, and whoever the Manchester club signs, it seems to be a good option.

How Diogo Costa and Joan Garcia compare

Both Costa and Garcia are similar in age, with the Portuguese star being one year older than the 24-year-old star.

Both goalkeepers also fit in with what is demanded in the modern game from the position, as they are good shot-stoppers, but are also capable of playing with the ball at their feet.

Garcia is the better of the two when it comes to saving shots, as the 24-year-old was La Liga’s leading shot-stopper this season with 146 saves, however, the Portuguese star is arguably better with the ball on the deck.

There are positives and negatives to both players, but it seems Viana sees Garcia as the more promising acquisition, hence why clubs such as Barcelona are also interested in the Spaniard.

It remains to be seen what the Espanyol star decides for his future, and it is one City hopes arrives soon, as they will not want to lose Costa while they wait for the 24-year-old.
