Ian Wright says £100m player made a ‘massive mistake’ when he didn’t sign for Manchester City

Manchester City have made some high-profile signings over the last 15 years.

From the addition of Sergio Aguero in 2011 to Omar Marmoush in January, fans of the Premier League giants have seen some incredible players play at the Etihad Stadium, which has resulted in every trophy possible returning to Manchester in recent times.

The biggest of them all was arguably the transfer of Erling Haaland during the summer of 2022, with the Man City superstar set to stay until 2034, having produced an insane amount of goals over the last three seasons.

That Norwegian would very likely be playing his football elsewhere had Man City completed the signing of a £100m striker in 2021, but despite the Manchester club’s very large offer, that deal never got over the line.

Ian Wright believes Harry Kane made a mistake signing Tottenham contract

During the summer of 2021, Pep Guardiola wanted Harry Kane at Man City with the Premier League giants going as far as submitting a £100m offer to Tottenham for the striker, but that was not considered enough.

The North London club wanted upwards of £120m for the England international, and were in a very strong position to demand this, as Kane had a contract until 2024 after penning new terms in 2018.

Ian Wright has been speaking about the Bayern Munich striker and has stated that the England captain made a mistake signing his final Tottenham contract, as he would have completed a move to Man City had he not.

“You think about that deal for Harry Kane, is he going to go to Man City? I was excited for him,” Wright said on SDS.

“I was thinking it was going to happen, but he signed a new contract before the 2018 World Cup, and for me that was a massive mistake, that was crazy.”

Darren Bent is one of many people who believe Kane would have been a better fit for Man City over Haaland, but if you ask fans of the Manchester club, they are pretty pleased with how things worked out.

How Erling Haaland compares to Harry Kane

Haaland and Kane are among the best strikers in the world, but the two superstars are very different from each other.

The Norwegian loves to use his physical attributes to bully defenders and power into the box to score goals, while Kane is technically better than the 25-year-old, with his higher football IQ also giving him the ability to drop deeper to create chances for his teammates.

The scary thing about Haaland is everything the Man City star has already achieved in football, as there is a seven-year difference between the 25-year-old and Kane.

There is still another level the Norwegian superstar can go to, which could not have been said had Guardiola added the Bayern star to his squad.

Some may say the Manchester club lucked into the signing of Haaland by missing out on Kane the year before, but either way, City made the right decision by not bidding higher for the England star.
