Ian Wright thinks Spanish international will be ‘disliked’ by Liverpool fans ‘for the rest of his life’ if he signs for Man City

Manchester City have plenty of experience when it comes to signing players from across the top five European leagues.

Specifically, recent years have seen the Manchester club secure deals to bring the likes of Savinho, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku to the Etihad Stadium among many others.

However, City mostly make these deals during the summer transfer periods rather than in January so their new players don’t join the first-team squad in the middle of the season.

Despite that, Pep Guardiola’s side have recently been linked with a move for one particular player during the upcoming winter transfer window.

This has since led to one pundit and former Premier League star claiming that this particular player would infuriate a certain top-flight fan base outside of City.

Wright claims Man City move for Martin Zubimendi would anger Liverpool

After seeing City secure a 3-2 win over Fulham last weekend, Ian Wright said this in a recent edition of Wrighty’s House about The Mirror’s recent report linking the Blues with a January transfer move for Martin Zubimendi.

He said: “If you feel that something’s not quite right in the air for City at the moment because Rodri’s gone, God forbid anything happens to [Erling] Haaland in their respect.

“But you could see why they probably have to go for someone like [Martin] Zubimendi in January.

“If he does go to City, then he knows that for the rest of his life, Liverpool fans will dislike him a little bit. It’s the kind of fan base you don’t want to turn down and let them know about it.

“But if Zubimendi goes there, then you think to yourself, okay, they’ve recognised, but that link alone for me says that City know, we need to do something.”

Zubimendi rejected Liverpool summer move

After being linked with a transfer move to Liverpool during the previous summer transfer window, Zubimendi decided to stay at Real Sociedad having been offered the chance to sign a new contract with higher wages according to Sky Sports.

In addition to making 198 senior appearances for Sociedad, the 25-year-old has also featured for the senior Spain national team on 12 occasions.

With Guardiola confirming Rodri’s knee injury has ended his season, as Wright mentioned, it’s understandable why the club may be looking to do something they don’t usually do and bring a new player in during the January window.

From Liverpool’s point of view, it’s easy to see why Wright thinks the fans of Arne Slot’s side would be bemused if Zubimendi joined City just a few months after turning down the chance to sign for the Reds because he wanted to stay at Sociedad.
