Alan Shearer was left blown away by Florian Wirtz after what the reported Manchester City target did for Germany against France at the weekend.

Wirtz is a player thought to be on City’s transfer radar, having become one of the world’s most promising young talents this season.

Wirtz bounced back from a serious knee injury to become an absolutely key player for Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso this term.

He has scored 11 goals and made 17 assists in 37 appearances so far, and the 20-year-old has unsurprisingly been attracting attention with his performances.

He impressed once again on Saturday, and the City target came in for praise from Premier League legend Alan Shearer…

Germany took on France in Paris on Saturday, and ran out 2-0 winners.

It was a statement win for Julian Nagelsmann’s side, who many don’t really see as a threat to win Euro 2024.

But to beat France fairly comfortably shows that they cannot be written off, especially when they have the talented Wirtz in their team.

Just seven seconds after the referee had blown the whistle to start the game, the attacking midfielder had the ball in the back of the net.

Germany played the ball backwards from kick-off and then dropped the ball into Wirtz who was in acres of space.

He turned, carried the ball forward and unleashed a sublime strike into the top corner, giving France goalkeeper Brice Samba absolutely no chance.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: “Did you see the goal?! It was incredible, wasn’t it? The way he stepped off the defender from kick-off, got the ball, turned and smashed it in from what, 20-25 yards. What a start and what a goal it was for them.”

Florian Wirtz would be an amazing signing by Man City

It is clear at this point that Wirtz is one of the most talented young players in football right now.

It has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that Wirtz is always being scouted by City.

But unfortunately, Romano also claimed that Wirtz is probably more likely to stay with Leverkusen for one more season before moving on.

So it doesn’t look all too likely that he’ll be a City player next season. Indeed, in January it was reported that Leverkusen had slapped a £111 million asking price on the youngster for this summer.

But City should most definitely keep him on their radar, because he stands to become a world-class talent.

Kevin De Bruyne could leave at the end of his contract in 2025, and Wirtz might just be the ideal long-term replacement.
