Jamie Carragher urges Liverpool to make transfer move that would seriously disrupt Man City

Manchester City have been trying to catch up to Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.

However, City have hit a few speedbumps recently, more specifically, they’ve lost their two previous league matches.

Having got beat by Bournemouth for the first time ever at the start of the month, City then followed that up by blowing a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.

With Pep Guardiola’s side now five points behind Liverpool at the top of the table, a pundit and former Reds player has urged the Merseyside club to do something transfer-related that could disrupt City’s already bumpy campaign.

Jamie Carragher discusses Liverpool move for Man City target Martin Zubimendi

In a recent edition of Stick to Football, Jamie Carragher was certain about what Liverpool should do in regards to making a January transfer swoop for reported City target Martin Zubimendi.

He said: “If I was Liverpool I’d be doing that. I’d be getting that done.

“I was thinking about this if you’re Arne Slot, let’s say an average Premier League manager is in his job for three or four years at a top club trying to win the league, [Mikel] Arteta has been [at Arsenal for] four or five years, you’re trying to build something.

“He might never be in this position again in terms of being five or nine points clear of Arsenal, five points clear of City, there’s a long way to go I get that and we know Liverpool don’t just do silly things in the transfer market but if there’s something there right now, do it.

“Zubimendi is the player that he wanted they end up putting [Ryan] Gravenberch, who’s been fantastic don’t get me wrong, but if he is the player that you want, go and do it.

“You might never be in this position, you might be three years and then City are City and they’re five points ahead of you going into Christmas time, just make it count.”

City and Liverpool could battle for Zubimendi

Last month, it was reported that City are interested in Zubimendi and could make a swoop for the Real Sociedad midfielder in January.

Back in the previous summer transfer window, it was reported by Sky Sports that Zubimendi had rejected the chance to join Liverpool.

At the age of 25, the Spaniard has made 204 senior appearances Sociedad across all competitions, totally nine goals and nine assists along the way.

With Rodri out injured for the season, this showcases City’s need for a new defensive-midfielder to be added to their squad.

Also, with the Blues currently five points below Slot’s side at the top of the Premier League table, getting the chance to not only strengthen their squad but also get one over on their North West rivals and perhaps get the edge over them should definitely push City towards signing Zubimendi in January.
