Manchester City still have some important business to complete in the transfer market.
The signing of Sverre Nypan last week increased the number of new faces in Pep Guardiola’s squad to five ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, a number City had planned to reach for ahead of the current transfer window opening.
Fabrizio Romano expects Man City to sign a right-back before the transfer window shuts, but their search so far has been very unsuccessful.
A goalkeeper will also need to be acquired should Ederson leave for Galatasaray over the coming weeks, with several names linked to the Etihad Stadium in recent weeks.
One is a Champions League winner; however, Man City could sign a better fit for the role, while also saving themselves a lot of money.

Manchester City linked with PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma
Pep Guardiola has been a fan of Gianluigi Donnarumma for some time now, with the legendary coach praising the Italian goalkeeper as far back as 2017.
This has fuelled rumours of the Manchester club moving for the Paris Saint-Germain star this summer, as Donnarumma has been linked to Man City once again in recent days, as uncertainty remains around the future of Ederson.
The 26-year-old has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world across recent months, and with a contract expiring in Paris in 2026, interested parties could acquire the goalkeeper for a reasonable fee.
TBR Football are the latest to report that Man City have engaged in talks over a potential move for Donnarumma; however, this is a deal the Manchester club need to avoid.
Aside from the 24/25 season, Donnarumma has been a hot-and-cold goalkeeper and is a player known to be mistake-prone. Another campaign needs to pass before it can be claimed that the Italian has put these issues behind him, which makes signing the former AC Milan star now a risk.
The PSG goalie is a great shot-stopper and is an imposing figure in the box, but the Italy international is not the best with the ball at his feet, which is a crucial element in how Guardiola likes to build up play.
Man City are also keen on Burnley’s James Trafford, and although he is not a star name like Donnarumma, the Englishman is certainly a better fit for the Premier League giants.
James Trafford is a better fit for Man City than Gianluigi Donnarumma
Signing Trafford would be an easier transition from Ederson, as the two goalkeepers are similar in ways, with both being modern goalkeepers who are very good with their feet and have a scary level of composure for the position they play.
Not only is the Burnley star a better fit, but the 22-year-old is also four years younger than Donnarumma and earns £96k per week less than the Italian star, going off their current contracts.
Trafford already knows what Man City expect from him and has a good relationship with the Manchester club’s goalkeeper coach, Xabier Mancisidor, which is a bonus.
Guardiola is very likely to move for the Burnley star should Ederson leave over the coming weeks, and if they get that deal done, it will certainly be the right decision.
