Man City want to pay Erling Haaland £500k-a-week but there’s one stumbling block

Manchester City are seeking to make Erling Haaland one of the highest-paid players in all of Europe in a bid to extend his contract.

Haaland has been a revelation for Manchester City since signing for the club in the summer of 2022 from Borussia Dortmund.

To date, he’s bagged 105 goals in just 114 appearances for the club, and also laid on 14 assists.

Pep Guardiola famously gave an emotional interview after winning the Premier League in 2021 declaring the club could not replace Sergio Aguero. But the Spaniard has undoubtedly found someone at least as good as the Argentine in Haaland, whose goalscoring numbers have just been outrageous.

There has been talk for a while now about City wanting to get Haaland tied down to an improved contract. Manchester City are said to be increasingly confident Haaland will extend his deal at the Etihad.

However, a new claim has been made about Haaland and there appears to have been one issue that is slowing negotiations down.

Man City want Erling Haaland release clause removed in new contract

It’s been reported by the Mirror that City are ready to hand Haaland a new contract that would see him become one of the best-paid players in Europe.

Right now, the Norwegian is thought to earn around £375,000 per week base wage, with only Kevin De Bruyne earning more at the club.

City are ready to take Haaland’s wage up to around £500,000 per week. The proposed new contract would also include two more years.

But currently, there is one stumbling block that is preventing an agreement from being reached – and that’s the release clause.

City apparently want his existing £150 million clause removing, for obvious reasons. But Haaland’s camp don’t want that, no doubt feeling that it gives other clubs an outside chance of signing the superstar.

It’s no secret that Haaland is open to moving on from City at some point. Earlier this year, Haaland left the door open to an exit, although he did state he was very happy at the club.

Haaland clearly wants a new experience later in his career

Hopefully, an agreement will soon be reached but it seems clear that Haaland is not going to be a player who stays at Manchester City his whole career.

As much as most City fans would love that, it’s just not realistic given Haaland is very ambitious and what he has already said.

He’s already won several trophies with City and set many brilliant records.

Appearances – 114
Goals – 103
Assists – 14
Trophies won – 6

It seems inevitable that he will eventually make a move to a club like Real Madrid or Barcelona if they can get their finances sorted. Indeed, it’s been suggested Haaland is ‘nailed on’ to end up in La Liga later down the line.

So City fans must enjoy Haaland while he’s here. It’s possible we may never see such a lethal goalscorer at the Etihad Stadium ever again once he does depart.
