Man City were 1-0 winners over Wolves on Friday night at the Etihad Stadium.
The three points are huge for Pep Guardiola’s team as they continue to chase their goal of qualifying for the Champions League next season as the result moves Man City up to third ahead of the rest of their rivals playing over the weekend.
Paul Merson predicted a tough night for Man City against Wolves, given the form of Vitor Pereira’s side, and that is what played out at the Etihad Stadium as the Midlands club really should have taken a lead into the halftime break.
However, that was not the case after Kevin De Bruyne struck to make it 1-0 and although the Belgian provided the crucial moment of the contest, Man City fans were quick to praise the performance of Josko Gvardiol.

Man City fans label Josko Gvardiol Player of the Season
Gvardiol has been crucial for Man City this season as the Croatian star has impressed at both left-back and centre-back throughout the campaign.
The 23-year-old once again stepped up against Wolves and provided a huge moment in the first half as the defender blocked a shot from Rayan Ait-Nouri off the line before De Bruyne gave City the lead.
This led to praise from Man City fans with several labelling the 23-year-old as the Manchester club’s Player of the Season
One fan wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “Gvardiol player of the season for City, no?
“Gvardiol has been an absolute blessing this season,” another Man City fan wrote
A third City supporter stated: “Let’s be honest. Gvardiol is the only one who gets anywhere near peak City.”
Josko Gvardiol needs to remain at centre-back
Gvardiol ended the game against Wolves at left-back after Nico O’Reilly was taken off just before the hour mark for Manuel Akanji and although the 23-year-old can play the role, it is not the Croatian’s best position.
Man City fans love Gvardiol at centre-back and will hope to see him play in that position for the majority of next season, which is the plan of Guardiola at the Manchester club.
The defender has shown in recent weeks that he can become one of the best centre-backs in the world and it will be interesting to see the levels the Croatia international can reach should he spend the entire 2025/26 campaign in his favourite position.
