Matheus Nunes has now made a ‘massive’ claim after big Man City news emerges

Manchester City have once again set out to win as much silverware as they can.

Their previous season saw City make history and become the first team to win four Premier League trophies in a row, making it six titles won in seven years.

After beating Manchester United in the Community Shield, Pep Guardiola’s side have gone on to win five and draw two of their following matches in the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup.

One player who will be looking to play a key role throughout the season after having a rather underwhelming period last term is Matheus Nunes.

Starting just 14 of the 29 games he appeared in for City across his debut season at the Etihad Stadium since joining from Wolves back in 2023, the midfielder scored his first goal for the club in their recent 2-1 win over Watford.

Following this game, the midfielder made a claim in the media regarding a big piece of news that has emerged concerning a key player in City’s squad recently.

Matheus Nunes addresses Rodri injury blow

Prior to the win over Watford, it was reported that Rodri could be out injured for the rest of the season as a result of the knee issue he picked up in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Nunes said this about his role in the team and how City will carry on without Rodri in the team for the foreseeable future.

He said: “I try to help the team every time the coach puts me on the field but I know the other guys are all ready as well because we have so much quality in the team.

“We’re going to have to fill the void because it’s a massive loss but whoever is on the pitch is going to perform well.

“We have shown that if any player is out we have another one that is ready and has top quality to play.

“Last year it happened with Erling [Haaland] and Kevin [De Bruyne] and we still managed to win. This year, I know we will be the same.”

Nunes has the chance to prove himself to Guardiola

Not only did Nunes score what turned out to be the winning goal in Tuesday’s win over the Hornets, but the midfielder managed to rack up four shots on target in total as well as successfully completing the two dribbles he attempted.

He also did his bit defensively by making two tackles, one interception and one clearance, ultimately earning himself a strong match rating of 8/10 from SofaScore, making him the joint-second-highest-rated City player on the night.

Having failed to find himself a regular spot in the team last season, the absence of Rodri could open a pathway for him to prove himself to Guardiola on a more consistent basis.

However, with Nunes sharing the quality City have in their ranks and their previous ability to win the title without having key players in the team, this should be very encouraging for supporters to hear following the news of Rodri’s injury.
