Thierry Henry has lauded Phil Foden for how pivotal he has been for Manchester City during the ongoing 2023/2024 season.

After City’s 3-1 triumph against Copenhagen, Rio Ferdinand claimed that unlike Bukayo Saka, the 23-year-old is a “world-class” player.

On Tuesday night, the Stockport-born attacker became the youngest Englishman (23 years and 261 days) to reach 50 appearances in the Champions League.

Thierry Henry praises Phil Foden for carrying Manchester City “on his shoulders” this season

After Manchester City’s latest victory in Europe’s elite competition, the £225,000-a-week (Sport Rac) man has 14 goals and 10 assists to his name in the Premier League and the Champions League this season.

Rio Ferdinand also recently claimed that the five-time Premier League winner has been the Sky Blues’ “go-to guy” this campaign.

Now, Thierry Henry has credited Phil Foden for carrying the burden of his side when big-hitters like Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland were injured for long periods of time.

“Phil Foden, I have to say, for me, when those guys were not around, he put that team on his shoulders. You have to give him his credit”, he said on CBS Sports after City beat Copenhagen in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.

Phil Foden could be up for individual awards by the end of the season

Not a single soul would perhaps disagree with Thierry Henry about Phil Foden, who has thrived when given the extra responsibility when Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland have been out injured.

With Foden producing terrific all-round displays and backing them up with goal and assist numbers, he could be up for individual awards at the end of the season.

After all, if Manchester City win any trophy this campaign, especially the Premier League or the Champions League or potentially even both, the Englishman will rightly be recognised as one of the pillars behind their success and as a result, be in contention to win individual accolades.

If Foden continues to perform at the rate he has, he could scoop up an individual accolade he has yet to win in his career, such as the PFA Player of the Year award.
