Former Manchester City centre-back Richard Dunne has hailed Phil Foden ahead of today’s clash with Manchester United, following his wonderful season so far.

City are taking on United today at the Etihad Stadium and are seeking to beat their bitter rivals to keep pace with Liverpool, who got a late win yesterday against Nottingham Forest.

It is simply a huge game for City today.

The challenge currently being presented by Liverpool and Arsenal is very strong, and Pep Guardiola‘s side could well be pushed all the way this term.

City need everyone bang at it today, and hopefully, Phil Foden can shine as he has been doing pretty much every game.

Ahead of today’s derby, Richard Dunne hailed the improvement he has made…

Dunne is appearing on City’s Matchday Live show on YouTube today to cast his eye over proceedings.

The former City captain is hoping to see a convincing performance at the Etihad against Erik ten Hag’s side, and believes Foden could be key.

Foden has enjoyed a truly terrific season so far.

The England international has already scored 16 goals and made 10 assists – if he scores just one more goal, it’ll be his highest-scoring season ever.

It’s been brilliant to watch him mostly in a central role, and Dunne has talked up his development this term ahead of today’s game. He said: “The improvement in him this season has been outstanding. I think Pep has spoken about how good he is in tight small areas.

“You can only imagine United will come here and try and defend and be compact and make things difficult. If you’re trying to get someone who can break them down centrally, then I think Phil will be your man.”

Foden has been extraordinary

This is without doubt the best season of Foden’s City career so far, and it’s difficult not to see him having some kind of impact today against United.

He’s in the form of his life, and he has to take huge credit for the way he has stepped up in the absence of key players.

Had he not taken on the responsibility in the way that he has, City may well have been further adrift of Liverpool at this point.

Foden spoke about Pep Guardiola calling him world-class recently. He himself doesn’t think he’s worthy of that title yet, but he certainly has to be very close now.
