Paul Scholes says Manchester City have a midfielder who’s actually even better than Rodri

Man City have been blessed with some top midfielders in recent years.

The Etihad Stadium has witnessed Yaya Toure burst through opposition lines in a City shirt, the wizardry of David Silva, and the incredible technical ability of Bernardo Silva, with many fans of the Manchester club wondering who is next.

The Premier League champions are in the market for a midfielder this summer with Man City continuing to show interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

The German would be an incredible addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad and with Rodri also set to return ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, Paul Scholes believes Man City already have a player who is better than the Euro 2024 winner.

Man City have a better midfielder than Rodri

It remains to be seen when Rodri will return for Man City with everyone at the Manchester club hoping to see the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner back before the FIFA Club World Cup this summer.

In the meantime, others have had to step up for City, and that is exactly what happened against Crystal Palace as Alan Shearer heaped praise on Kevin De Bruyne after the Belgian star’s masterclass against the Eagles.

Following the 33-year-old’s impressive display on Saturday, Man United legend has labelled De Bruyne as the best midfielder in the world, despite the Man City star’s struggles this season.

When asked on The Overlap who the best midfielder in the world is at present, Scholes replied with”Kevin De Bruyne”, before going on to label Zinedine Zidane as the best midfielder of all time.

Man City fans will be happy to hear Scholes’ claim, however, they will also know that De Bruyne has not been at his best this season and that others are more worthy of the title

When it comes to other positions, one Man City star should definitely be considered the best in his position, however, Scholes decided to overlook him.

Paul Scholes overlooks Erling Haaland as world’s best striker

This season has not been a true reflection of Man City’s players as many of Guardiola’s key stars have been out of form or are coming towards the end of their careers at the highest level.

Although Scholes’ De Bruyne claim may not be true at present, one man who should be considered the best in the world in his position is Erling Haaland as the Norwegian has been on fire since joining the Manchester club during the summer of 2023.

When asked who the best striker in the world is at present, Scholes named ‘Kylian Mbappe’ over Man City’s number nine.

Haaland is currently out injured, but once he returns, he will be looking to make a point to Scholes as the 120 goals and 20 assists the 24-year-old has produced across 138 games for Man City is not a record that should be overlooked.

Like many stars in Guardiola’s squad, the striker has not been at his best this season, but the City superstar is certainly not a player in decline.
