Manchester City have been linked with a move for Florian Wirtz in recent weeks – and yesterday he put in a truly special performance for Bayer Leverkusen.
City are on the hunt for a new creative midfielder following the injury to Kevin De Bruyne.
In the last week or so, reports have been strong about Eberechi Eze and Matheus Nunes.
Seemingly, it’s the Wolves midfielder who is the main priority at the moment.
But given the late stage of the window we’re at, he could be difficult to prise away.
Wirtz is someone the club have looked at.
Sadly though, there have been suggestions in the past week that City are probably not going to be signing Wirtz in this window.
MORE MAN CITY STORIES
Sam Lee has reported the ‘quality’ youngster could be a possibility next summer, though.
He’s definitely a talented player to keep tabs on – and his display yesterday was nothing short of amazing.
Man City target Florian Wirtz channels inner David Silva for Bayer Leverkusen
Yesterday, Bayer Leverkusen were in Bundesliga action against Borussia Monchendgladbach, and ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
And Wirtz was at the heart of everything for the visitors.
And a remarkable statistic has emerged since the game, which will probably be of interest to City supporters for obvious reasons.
Opta wrote after the game: “10 – Florian Wirtz created 10 chances in open play for Bayer Leverkusen today; the last player to exceed this total in any of Europe’s big five leagues was David Silva for Manchester City in March 2015 against West Brom (11). Prodigy.”
To create 10 chances from open play in a game of professional football is seriously impressive.
And the fact Silva was able to create 11 back in 2015 against West Brom just shows what an unbelievable player the Spaniard was.
Wirtz is amazing and City must keep tabs amid Kevin De Bruyne concerns
What a player Wirtz looks already.
He may only be 20, but the German has serious potential.
It is so good to see him being so influential again, after he suffered a serious knee injury in March 2022.
Without doubt he is a player that City should be keeping a close eye on.

It doesn’t seem likely that he’ll be targeted in the coming days, but he is perhaps someone the club will look at in the future.
De Bruyne’s injury problems are an uncomfortable consideration at the moment, and the club definitely have to start thinking about a long-term replacement for the creative genius.
