The upcoming January transfer window could end up being an important one for Manchester City.
After Rodri suffered a season-ending injury back in September, Pep Guardiola suggested City could sign a midfielder in January to replace the injured Spaniard.
Aside from that, one midfielder who will be making a move to the Etihad Stadium in January is Claudio Echeverri following the end of his loan spell with River Plate which was organised when City landed their £12.5m (via BBC Sport) deal at the start of the year.
On the subject of the 18-year-old’s eventual move to Manchester, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged concerning what sort of role Echeverri is likely to have in the team.

Pep Guardiola’s plan for Claudio Echeverri
A recent report from Give Me Sport has claimed that Guardiola will give Echeverri a restricted role in the City team.
This is due to City’s poor run of form in recent weeks resulting in the Blues needing to be as perfect as possible to give them the best chance of winning some trophies by the end of the campaign.
From Echeverri’s perspective, Guardiola doesn’t want to put the midfielder under pressure in the early stages of his time in England, meaning that he may not be particularly prominent in the team for the first few weeks of his arrival.
Martin Demichelis backed Echeverri to shine at City
Back in June, former City player and ex-River Plate manager Martin Demichelis gave his verdict on Echeverri, saying this on what he’s like as a player and what his chances of developing his game at the Manchester club.
He said: “Claudio is truly one of the great emerging talents in River’s football. Claudio is still in the stage of evolution. He has made a very, very significant leap in recent months.
“Technically, he is a marvel. We enjoy watching him play, even at such a young age. He caught everyone’s attention. We’ll enjoy him for a while longer and then leave him to you.”
“He also has great individual technique and handles the ball very well. That’s why going to City is ideal for Claudio.
“There is no better team for him to continue his path to further development.”

With Echeverri apparently set to have limited game time upon his arrival at City, he’ll have to make sure he does everything he can on the training pitch to convince Guardiola he has what it takes to be a prominent player in the team despite his young age.
