Troy Deeney says Man City have signed a player who is simply the best in the world at what he does

Troy Deeney believes one of Manchester City’s summer signings is the best player in the world at what he does.

After an underwhelming 2024/25 campaign, Pep Guardiola was keen to add four to five new faces to his squad, and Hugo Viana delivered for his manager, as seven players were bought by the Premier League giants throughout the summer transfer window.

City addressed many of the concerns they had ahead of the new season, although Guardiola never got a right-back, with Tijjani Reijnders viewed by many as the best signing the Manchester club made during the summer.

Deeney thinks that accolade could be contested by another new face in Manchester, with the former Premier League striker stating that the player is the best in the world at what he does.

Troy Deeney thinks Gianluigi Donnarumma is the best goalkeeper in the world

Man City completed the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG on deadline day to replace Ederson, who departed the Manchester club to start a new chapter in his career with Fenerbahce in Turkey.

Many have questioned the signing of Donnarumma due to his lack of ball-playing skills, but Deeney is one pundit who has no doubts over whether the 26-year-old will be a success at the Etihad Stadium.

“Pep’s gone, ‘no, we’ve gotta go and get the best goalkeeper’ and Donnarumma, for me, is the best goalkeeper in world football,” Deeney said on his TikTok account. “He is excellent with his hands, commands the area, the big-time saves, the base for PSG last year.

“And let me tell you, as a striker, when, when you’re running up against a top-class goalkeeper, it plays in your mind. You’re like, ‘oh, my god, he’s good, and what am I gonna have to do,’ because they make the goal look so small.

“I’ve had that privilege playing against a lot of these good goalkeepers. I remember playing against Courtois, for example, when he was at Chelsea. Whenever you took a shot, he just made it look like the goal was the smallest thing in the world.”

Many will argue against Deeney’s claim that Donnarumma is the best goalkeeper, as there are others, such as Thibaut Courtois and Alisson, who believe they deserve that label.

How Gianluigi Donnarumma compares to Alisson Becker

For many, Liverpool’s Alisson Becker is considered the best goalkeeper in the Premier League as the Brazilian is super reliable and has made some massive saves to win the Reds trophies in recent seasons.

The Brazilian is similar to Donnarumma as both are very good goalkeepers on their line. However, the Liverpool shot-stopper is better with the ball at his feet and stronger at claiming crosses.

The 32-year-old is the standard Donnarumma will be matched against by Man City fans and pundits, a challenge the Italian will certainly embrace.
