Troy Deeney shares why he thinks Erling Haaland actually ‘looked frustrated’ as Man City beat Brentford

So far this season, Erling Haaland has made goalscoring look easy against several top-class Premier League defences.

It could be argued that Haaland is in the form of his life and considering he is just 24, he has plenty of years left to further improve as a player.

Ahead of Manchester City’s 2-1 win against Brentford, Thomas Frank singled Haaland out as a player who can be “impossible” to tame.

The Bees boss’ claim was felt by his side at the Etihad Stadium as despite their best efforts, the Norwegian international got on the scoresheet twice.

The £51 million man is punishing teams every time he gets a sight of goal; which was not the case last season as he did not look as sharp as he did during his debut season at Manchester City.

But the Brentford backline was deemed powerless in stopping both of Haaland’s goals from nestling into the back of the net.

However, goalscorers like the two-time Premier League winner never seem to be satisfied, despite a phenomenal day’s of work.

Deeney makes observation about Man City superstar’s “frustrated” body language

If world-class strikers were content with scoring a brace, they would perhaps not put the numbers on the board that they do season after season.

Instead, a number nine like Haaland perhaps always feels he could add even more goals to his tally despite putting in a masterful display.

Such a constant hunger for scoring goals is a trait that defines the best forwards in world football.

Even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who were not traditional strikers for a majority of their careers pushed themselves to increase their goal output year after year.

As a result, it is no coincidence that their respective goal tallies seem insurmountable for others to replicate, as things stand.

In Troy Deeney’s Premier League Team of the Week for BBC Sport, he claimed that Haaland did not look particularly happy against Brentford due to one key reason.

“You can’t not mention the record man. He’s probably going to get 110 goals and 47 hat-tricks this season! He had a tough week with personal issues but came, scored two and even looked frustrated he didn’t get a hat-trick.”

Erling Haaland would have been aiming to hit Premier League record

Haaland would have had his sights set on becoming the first player in Premier League histotry to score three successive hat-tricks.

Having scored a brace in the first half against Brentford, the decorated striker would have backed himself to get a third in the second half.

However, that was not to be for Haaland, despite testing Mark Flekken.

Strikers, in particular, would perhaps be tempted by such records to cement their names in the history books.

Especially when the feat in question could have been a standalone one that was not even accomplished by legendary goalscorers like Alan Shearer, Sergio Aguero, Thierry Henry and Luis Suarez in the Premier League.

As a result, if Troy Deeney is indeed spot on about Haaland’s frustrations, one can understand why the star striker potentially felt the way he did.
