Manchester City have had a lot of top players representing their club since their Abu Dhabi takeover back in 2008.

Having won a plethora of trophies since then, City have welcomed and anointed several legends who have achieved great things at the Etihad Stadium.

One of those legends is Vincent Kompany, who captained the club to their first four Premier League titles and lifted numerous other domestic trophies before bringing his 11-year spell at the club to an end in 2019.

With the former defender, who Pep Guardiola previously backed to become City’s manager in the future now in charge of Bayern Munich following two years as Burnley’s head coach, he has been speaking about one player he came up up against during his playing days with the Citizens.

Vincent Kompany reflects on playing against Harry Kane at Man City

Appearing in a recent video shared on the TNT Sports YouTube channel ahead of Bayern’s Champions League match against Aston Villa, Kompany had this to say when asked what he has made of Harry Kane since the duo began working together at the German club.

He said: “Impressive. I remember playing against him, of course, and there were good battles, let’s be honest for, club and country.

“But then you get to work with someone so you get to understand the mindset.

“He’s improved since I played against him and obviously to see and witness the progress he’s made over the years and to pick it up, I get to see to have a real insight into his mindset and I get to understand why he’s been such a prolific goalscorer, why he’s been such a prolific leader.

“He’s got many, many good years ahead of him still.”

How many times did Kompany play against Kane at City?

During his time at City, Kompany played against Kane on four occasions, three of which ended with the former defender being on the winning side and the other one seeing the striker’s Tottenham Hotspur side beating the Blues 2-1 in the 2015/16 season.

Then on the international stage, the former City captain featured in Belgium’s 2-0 win over England in the third-place play-off game during the 2018 World Cup.

After scoring 280 goals in 435 appearances for Spurs, the striker joined Bayern for £100m (via Sky Sports) back in the 2023 summer transfer window.

In his debut season at the German club, the Englishman, who Guardiola’s side made a £100m (via Sky Sports) bid to sign back in 2021, bagged 44 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions.

With seven games under his belt since Kompany was appointed as Bayern’s manager, prior to their Champions League game against Villa, Kane has scored 10 goals in total.

This shows that the former Spurs star has certainly benefited from having Kompany as his manager after previously having him as an opponent.
