Phil Foden is one of the best academy products Manchester City have ever produced.

At just 24, the midfielder has already accumulated 310 appearances for the Manchester club, scoring 97 goals alongside 60 assists. The Englishman has also won every title he has ever competed for at the Etihad Stadium with an impressive six Premier League medals in his collection.

The 23/24 campaign was a magical one for Foden as the Man City star was instrumental to the success of Pep Guardiola’s side, scoring 27 goals alongside 13 assists, which resulted in the England international winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.

This season, Foden’s form has taken a massive dip and now Man United legend Ryan Giggs has shared what he expects from the Manchester City star next season.

Ryan Giggs expects Phil Foden bounce back

In a recent interview, Foden stated that the reason for Man City’s struggles this season are a result of the Manchester club suffering from fatigue after many years of fighting for the biggest honours in the sport.

With Kevin De Bruyne leaving Man City at the end of the season, Teddy Sheringham expects Foden to step up in the Belgian’s absence, but it remains to be seen if the 24-year-old is up to the challenge.

Giggs has been speaking to Rio Ferdinand about the Man City star on Rio Ferdinand Presents, with the Man United legend expecting the midfielder to bounce back for City next season.

“Phil Foden, and yeah, he’s got everything,” Giggs said. “You know, he can beat a man and score a goal, bravery to take the ball, just like City at the moment, it’s just not happening for him. So he’ll come back 100 per cent.”

Foden showed against Everton that he is willing to take a backseat at Man City this season and support his teammates, but that cannot be the case throughout the 25/26 campaign.

Many people view England international has this season’s biggest flop after what he achieved during the 2023/24 campaign at the Etihad Stadium and unfortunately for Foden, they have got a case.

Phil Foden labelled flop of the season

With the 2024/25 campaign coming towards its conclusion, ESPN and TNT Sports commentator Ian Darke has put Foden top of his list for the title of flop of the season.

Darke wrote on ESPN: “Last season’s Player of the Year has, by his own high standards, lost his mojo and ability to impact matches. Foden has cut a sorrowful figure, including being subbed in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

“He has not fired for England either, his form perhaps a reflection of the broader downturn at City. No surprise if he returns to his best next term if all parties can agree on his best position.”

Darke’s assessment is justified as the 24-year-old’s standards have dropped dramatically but that is the case for many others, which has resulted in Man City struggling as a whole.

With the 2026 World Cup a big objective for many stars next season, representing England at the tournament, as well as bringing the Premier League title back to Manchester, should be huge motivation for Foden and as a result, fans of the Manchester club should expect the best version of the midfielder.
