Manchester City fans have been waiting patiently to see what happens with Claudio Echeverri – the Argentinian star who signed for City in 2024.

Manchester City signed Claudio Echeverri form River Plate in 2024, paying a reported £12.5 million fee with add-ons before sending him back to Argentina on loan.

The 19-year-old has been back at River Plate where he scored three and assisted six more in 30 league games for the club, and the attacking midfielder has since been playing with his nation’s U20s side.

Echeverri shone during the U20 South American Championships with Argentina. He scored six and assisted three in nine games for Argentina’s U20s who lost the final to Paraguay.

Meanwhile at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola watched his side claim a much-needed and important 4-0 win over Newcastle United last time out, setting them in good stead ahead of the reverse fixture against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Ahead of the game, journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on Echeverri.

Fabrizio Romano says Claudio Echeverri is on his way to England

After sealing his move to City more than a year ago now, in January 2024, Echeverri now looks set to finally join up with Guardiola’s team in England following the conclusion of the U20 South American Championships.

Romano has posted on X that Echeverri ‘will travel to England this week’ and join up with the City team ‘immediately’. Romano adds that Echeverri is ‘ready after completing all games with Argentina U20’.

Previous reports suggests Echeverri will play a limited role at Man City when he eventually arrived.

Martin Demichelis has high hopes for Claudio Echeverri at Man City

Echeverri may have been given the lowdown on City already, having been managed by former Man City man Martin Demichelis at River Plate up until last year.

Speaking in 2024, Demichelis gave his verdict on Echeverri and what he’s like as a player, explaining: “Claudio is truly one of the great emerging talents in River’s football.”

Demichelis then added: “Technically, he is a marvel. We enjoy watching him play, even at such a young age. He caught everyone’s attention. We’ll enjoy him for a while longer and then leave him to you.”

It might be that we hear very little of Echeverri from now until the end of the season. But he’s arriving at the Etihad now and that’s the important thing. It’ll be a culture shock, no doubt, but if he’s as good as people say then he’ll have no trouble fitting in.
