Big blow for Man City as surgery could rule out player they now want to sign for four months

After signing three players in quick time this summer, Manchester City will be hoping that during the remainder of the transfer window, they can make similarly seamless additions to their squad.

However, doing so will be easier said than done for Manchester City, who have 17 non-homegrown players and as a result, they may have to make some outgoings to bring new players in.

One such example is German international Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who has caught Manchester City’s eye.

However, Stefan Ortega is assessing his future, as exclusively revealed by Manchester City News and in the event that he ends up leaving this summer, the Sky Blues could make a move for the Barcelona goalkeeper.

Man City target Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffers four-month long injury

Luis Suarez has raved about Ter Stegen, who has etched his reputation as one of the world’s best shotstoppers since his move to the Spanish giants.

Considering Galatasaray back themselves to sign Ederson, who fancies a move to Turkey if his wage demands are met, Manchester City may soon consider Ter Stegen a priority signing.

However, SPORT have now reported that the Champions League winner is considering undergoing back surgery, which could mean the player may be ruled out for four months.

After Manchester City target Ter Stegen headed back to Barcelona’s gym after the summer, it is believed that he had “serious” back pain and underwent tests that confirmed that he has no choice but to undergo surgery.

As a result, the report claims that the former Borussia Monchengladbach star’s chances of departing Hansi Flick’s side are virtually non-existent, with a transfer only possible in the winter months.

Ter Stegen’s objective is to be playing regular football during the second half of next season as it has been reported that he aims to dislodge Manuel Neuer as Germany’s number one for the 2026 World Cup.

Man City are already targeting Rayan Cherki’s French teammate

The report has also stated that the 33-year-old will have no choice but to look for an exit in the winter if he undergoes surgery, as Barcelona have signed Joan Garcia and extended Wojciech Szczęsny’s contract until 2027.

Considering Ederson claimed he would stay at Manchester City, perhaps one resolution for Pep Guardiola and Co would be to keep him as they may no longer have any chance of signing Ter Stegen.

However, Manchester City are targeting Lucas Chevalier, who is coming off the back of being recognised as Lille’s Player of the Season during the previous campaign.

Chevalier, who is Rayan Cherki’s French teammate is also generating interest from City’s local rivals, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

With almost a month left for the 2025/2026 season to start, Manchester City still have time left to bolster their ranks but they must act quickly.
