Manchester City are closing in on their sixth signing of the summer transfer window after a new update from Fabrizio Romano.

The winds of change are sweeping through Manchester City and it’s been one of the busiest summer transfer windows for some time.

Pep Guardiola has already had £130m spent on his side as the club looks to make amends after last season’s extremely disappointing campaign.

City moved swiftly in their first stage of the rebuild, quickly bringing in Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Marcus Bettinelli, and Rayan Ait Nouri in time for the Club World Cup campaign.

Norwegian prospect Sverre Nypan has also joined the club from Rosenborg, but now City are set to make another major first-team addition.

According to Fabrizio Romano, James Trafford will soon be returning to the Etihad Stadium.

James Trafford is returning to Manchester City in £40m transfer

It appeared that City’s goalkeeper situation was the last area that needed sorting this summer, with Ederson set to remain as Guardiola’s No.1.

However, the Brazilian’s future has been cast into doubt in recent weeks, with City working on bringing Trafford back to the club to replace him should he depart.

City sold Trafford to Burnley in 2023 but smartly inserted a buy-back clause into the deal, which they are now activating.

Transfer guru Romano took to X on Friday morning to report: “Manchester City agree deal to sign James Trafford as new goalkeeper, here we go!

“Deal in place with Burnley under value of £40m buy-back clause.

“Trafford said yes to Man City as Pep Guardiola wanted him. Newcastle are also informed about Trafford’s decision.”

Though the clause is at £40m, City’s bid is below that, with David Ornstein reporting that City activated the right to match the offer made by Newcastle United, who had looked destined to sign Trafford, of £27m, and Trafford has chosen City.

Trafford, who Vincent Kompany once labelled as ‘terrific’, smashed countless records last season in a sensational season with Burnley in the Championship, as he conceded just 16 goals and kept 29 clean sheets.

Ederson wants Galatasaray transfer but is set for Man City stay

The news comes as little surprise given the uncertainty surrounding Ederson.

According to Galatasaray journalist Eyup Yildiz, Ederson has told City he wants to play for the Turkish giants and the move could be completed after they have signed Victor Osimhen.

Yildiz wrote on X: “Manchester City has changed their mind about Ederson, they want to keep him in the team, but Ederson does not want to stay.

“He has informed the club that he wants to play for Galatasaray. I think Ederson’s transfer will be finalised after Osimhen’s. After Muslera, we will entrust the goal to another great goalkeeper.”

However, Ornstein’s report says that Ederson will stay at City and it’s instead Ortega who could leave.
