Sverre Nypan became Manchester City’s fifth signing of the 2025 summer transfer window last week.
Man City announced the signing of Nypan on Thursday, with the 18-year-old joining the Premier League giants from Rosenborg as part of a £12.5m deal.
The Norwegian is deemed one of the brightest talents in all of Europe, and with several other big clubs interested in the midfielder, the acquisition of the youngster is a big coup for the Manchester side.
The next thing Man City need to decide is what to do with Nypan for the 2025/26 campaign, with a loan move the most likely option for the Norwegian star; however, no decision has been made on that front yet.

Man City view Sverre Nypan as a first-team signing
A loan move was always part of Man City’s plan for Nypan upon his signing, with Fabrizio Romano stating in June that Girona was not a likely option for the Norwegian star.
Manchester Evening News’ Tyrone Marshall has now stated that City view the 18-year-old as a first-team signing and not an addition to their academy, and where the midfielder will play throughout the 25/26 campaign currently remains unknown.
“But yeah, I think he didn’t catch my eye that day. But a very highly rated player, a real technical player,” Marshall said about Nypan on Talking City – Manchester City Podcast. “He is going to be, he’s expected to go out on loan, and told there’s no deal agreed at the moment in terms of where he’ll go.
“So it’s not a formality that he’ll necessarily go to Girona or something like that. And if he’s still in the building by July 28th, he will train with the first team when they return to pre-season training.
“So kind of being considered a first-team signing at the moment with the expectation that he’ll go out on loan and get some more first-team experience. But 70 games at 18, it’s fair to say he already has plenty of first-team experience as well.”
Man City fans are already worried about Nypan not getting a chance at the Premier League club; therefore, this loan move could be crucial, as the Norwegian will have tough competition over the coming years with Claudio Echeverri.

Sverre Nypan and Claudio Echeverri to battle to be Man City’s next midfield star
Man City signed Rayan Cherki this summer to be Kevin De Bruyne’s direct replacement in the number ten role for the 25/26 season; however, long-term Echeverri and possibly Nypan will also be in contention for the position.
The Argentine star is the most likely to succeed in this battle as the 19-year-old is the more attacking of the two youngsters, with the former River Plate star also being able to play on both wings.
Nypan is more of a central midfielder, but the number 10 role is also an area of the pitch where the 18-year-old can shine. Guardiola’s latest signing does have an advantage over his new Man City teammate though, as the former Rosenborg star has racked up nearly double the amount of experience.
| Player | Games | Goals | Assists | Minutes |
| Sverre Nypan | 83 | 16 | 11 | 5653 |
| Claudio Echeverri | 52 | 5 | 8 | 2653 |
History has shown that the path into the first team at City is very hard; therefore, the likelihood is that only one of these two stars will make it at the Etihad Stadium.
Both players are expected to go out on loan over the coming weeks, and this decision could be crucial, as it could be the start of an incredible career at Man City for both youngsters.
