Ian Wright believes £26m Man City star would have been a great signing for Chelsea

Ian Wright believes Chelsea should have signed one of Manchester City’s current players during the summer transfer window.

The latest market was a busy one for both Premier League clubs as they made major changes to their squad with Pep Guardiola seeing seven new faces arrive at the Etihad Stadium, while 10 stars were recruited at Stamford Bridge.

Despite this, the Blues never addressed a key issue in their squad, and Wright has now admitted that he is still shocked that the London club never signed one of Man City’s current stars.

Chelsea’s decision has worked out perfectly for Guardiola, as the £26m player has stepped up in recent games.

Ian Wright thinks Chelsea should have signed Gianluigi Donnarumma

Manchester City completed the signing of Donnarumma on deadline day after Ederson decided he wanted to leave the Manchester club to start a new chapter in his career with Fenerbahce.

City pounced on the opportunity after Paris Saint-Germain decided the Italian was no longer needed at the Ligue 1 champions, with Manchester United the only club to challenge Man City for the goalkeeper.

Speaking about Donnarumma, Wright admitted that he could not believe Chelsea did not move for the 26-year-old this summer, as Robert Sanchez has proven to be an issue at the London club during Enzo Maresca’s time at Stamford Bridge.

“Why didn’t Chelsea buy him? Why didn’t Chelsea buy him? I heard it was to do with the money, wasn’t it? It’s to do with the money that PSG were not giving him anymore,” Wright said on Stick to Football.

Mikel Arteta was impressed with Donnarumma after Man City’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the weekend, with the Gunners boss being one of many.

The signing of the Italian has proved to be the correct one so far, and it begs the question of why more clubs were not in for the Man City star.

How Gianluigi Donnarumma compares to Robert Sanchez

Sanchez is one of the weak links in Chelsea’s current team, and the only reason the Blues never moved for Donnarumma has to be the money the goalkeeper was demanding.

The Spaniard is very error-prone and is not one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League. Donnarumma has eradicated the mistakes he used to make from his game throughout last season, while the 26-year-old has improved in many areas, such as his shot-stopping.

Chelsea’s decision not to sign Donnarumma has surprised many, as the Italian is still only 26, did not cost a lot, and more importantly, is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

It is a decision Man City fans will not care about, as despite some initial confusion as to why the Manchester club were buying the Italian international, the goalkeeper has proven to be a great addition.
