The 2024 summer transfer window saw Manchester City get linked with various players across Europe.
Despite that, City only secured a £33m deal for Savinho while bringing Ilkay Gundogan back to the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer from Barcelona.
One figure Pep Guardiola’s side were linked to in the summer was Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala.
Having not landed a deal for the German over the summer, it was reported in October that Bayern are optimistic that Musiala will sign a new deal at the club rather than look to make a move elsewhere.
However, that is yet to happen, leaving Musiala’s current deal set to expire in the summer of 2026.
Now – though – a German football pundit and former Bayern star has shared a claim regarding how Guardiola and City could land a deal for the 21-year-old in the near future.

Lothar Matthaus makes Man City claim in Jamal Musiala transfer chase
Speaking to SportBILD (via Sport Witness), Lothar Matthaus shared this assessment about Musiala’s future and City’s prospect of securing a transfer deal for him.
He said: “Musiala was trained in England, but he is in great hands at Bayern and is already an ambassador for the club.
“Nevertheless, I am not sure that his advisors will receive many calls from interested clubs. This is where Pep Guardiola’s extension at Manchester City could still be important.
“He wants to write the next era and needs fresh blood to do so, because Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, two key players in midfield, are retiring in the long term.
“That is why I can imagine that he and City will fully enter the poker game for Musiala and Florian Wirtz. Pep is already a myth.
“And what we must not forget: City brought in Josko Gvardiol from Leipzig for €91.5m (£77m). That shows how the ratios are: if City are serious, they can pay insane amounts.”
Musiala should be a top summer target for City
After spending some time in Chelsea’s youth ranks, Musiala has gone on to make 179 senior appearances for Bayern across all competitions, scoring 52 goals and supplying 35 assists along the way.
Earlier this week, Guardiola hinted at a City squad overhaul due to the average age of his current crop of senior players.
Bearing in mind how City have several midfielders who have hit the age of 30 such as Kevin De Bruyne (33), Ilkay Gundogan (34), Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva (30), bringing in a player such as Musiala could be an ideal way for the Blues to secure a long-term heir for one of their more older midfield figures.
Taking that on board, as well as the knowledge that Guardiola will now remain at City until 2027 due to his new contract extension as Matthaus mentioned, Musiala should be a top priority for the Manchester club if he doesn’t end up signing a contract at Bayern before the summer transfer window opens.
