Pep Guardiola shares fresh update on international management ambitions after England speculation

Manchester City could well see one of their key figures leave the club at the end of the season.

Specifically, Pep Guardiola’s contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire in June.

This means that unless he signs a contract extension beforehand, this will be his final season as City’s manager.

During the recent international break, it was reported by The Times that the FA had sounded out Guardiola as a potential candidate for the England job.

Prior to Thomas Tuchel’s appointment, Guardiola said that he has not yet made a decision about his City future.

Back in December, Guillem Balague claimed that managing a national side is something that Guardiola will aim to do once he leaves City.

Now though, the 53-year-old has shed some light on his future in management and whether the possibility of taking charge of a national team is something that appeals to him.

Pep Guardiola responds to question on international management aim

When asked in his recent press conference if he still has an ambition to manage a national side at some point in his future, Guardiola said this in response before shedding some light on his immediate future.

He said: “Yes. I have to decide. I have not taken a decision, when I do I will inform you. There is no news, I have nothing to add. My concern only is for Wolves.”

What has Guardiola said about international management?

Back in 2017, when asked if he’d ever be interested in taking the England job, Guardiola said this about international management.

He said: “No. Always, I believe in the English people has to be manager for the national team, the Brazilian people has to be manager for the Brazilian team.”

Assuming he still feels this way, it may not be too much of a surprise in terms of which nation Guardiola goes on to manage in the future.

However, having won a plethora of trophies with City, there aren’t likely to be many people connected to the club who would want to see anything other than Guardiola sign a contract extension before the end of the season.

Moving forward, the best case scenario from a City point of view would be of the 53-year-old put pen to paper on a contract extension as soon as possible to put to bed any speculation about his future.
