£101m Man City target has now nearly agreed to sign for Bayern Munich instead

Change is coming to Man City this summer after their underwhelming 2024/45 campaign.

Having won four Premier League titles in a row, the current term has seen City slip into fighting for a place in the Champions League with Pep Guardiola’s men currently fourth in the standings, while there is also the opportunity to add the FA Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup to their trophy cabinet.

Although this is not a complete disaster, Guardiola is looking to avoid a repeat of this next season, with Man City expected to sign several stars, bringing in a right-back, at least one midfield signing, a left-back, and probably a goalkeeper.

Man City’s top midfield target has been Florian Wirtz and a new update does not provide the Manchester club with good news.

Man City lose ground in Florian Wirtz race

With Kevin De Bruyne set to leave Man City at the end of the season, Guardiola is keen to replace the Belgian superstar with Wirtz as the 21-year-old is regarded as one of the best young talents in world football.

The Man City boss is said to have already spoken with Wirtz over a summer move, but City face tough competition from Bayern Munich, who love to keep the best German talent in the country.

According to Santi Aouna, Bayern have now taken the lead in the race for the Bayer Leverkusen star with a verbal agreement having almost been reached between the Bundesliga leaders and Wirtz’s camp.

However, there has been no agreement reached between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich over a transfer fee, which leaves the race open.

Man City are still in the race for the German star should he decide to leave Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the 2025/26 season, but the Manchester club will need to get moving as Bayern Munich are willing to spend big to land Wirtz.

The youngster is set to cost interested clubs £101m, which is without the cost of other added fees such as the player’s salary and bonuses.

Florian Wirtz is the perfect Kevin De Bruyne replacement

With De Bruyne looking set to move to the MLS this summer, Man City have a very hard task in trying to replace the 33-year-old after all the Belgian has done for the Manchester club.

Given his age, Wirtz is a very good option as the 21-year-old is already one of the most exciting midfielders in the world and under Guardiola’s watch, he will only get better.

It remains unknown when Wirtz will make a decision about his future as Leverkusen are keen to keep the midfielder at the club.

It now seems to be a straight shootout between Man City and Bayern should the midfielder decide to leave and the Premier League club will need to be at their best during negotiations, if they are to tempt the German talent away from Bayern.
