The future of Rodri has been a topic of discussion in recent days.
With the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner fully focused on bouncing back from the serious ACL injury he suffered at the start of last season, Man City fans would not have been expecting talk over his future to appear this summer.
However, this took place last week as a report out of Spain stated that Real Madrid have grown in confidence that they could sign Rodri, as Man City now look to get a new contract for the midfielder sorted as quickly as possible.
It was reported on Tuesday morning that Real Madrid do not have plans to sign Rodri this summer; however, the Premier League club are not out of the woods, as the La Liga giants’ interest remains and will likely assess the 29-year-old this season ahead of 2026 and 2027.
A new contract for the Spaniard would deal Real Madrid a big blow, and Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on this situation.

Man City to work on Rodri contract over the coming months
Romano has provided some additional clarity on Rodri’s situation, amid the Real Madrid rumours, with the transfer expert stating that there is no chance the midfielder leaves this summer, and that a new Man City deal will be worked on over the coming months.
“This summer, there is nothing happening for Rodri. He is staying at Manchester City,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“Rodri is recovering from an important injury, and it is not the right moment to think about transfers or these kind of things. So there is zero happening. Zero happened. Zero gonna happen this summer for Rodri.
“The situation is completely quiet. Then, in the next months for Rodri, it is going to be time also to decide on his new contract, because Manchester City already started discussing a new contract with Rodri some time ago, and so this new contract topic is going to enter important stages.
“Real Madrid, of course, appreciates Rodri, who doesn’t appreciate a Ballon d’Or winner, a fantastic player like him, but at the moment, for Real Madrid, this summer is not something that can happen or is being negotiated.
“Then, for the future, we will see what happens in these conversations between Rodri and Manchester City over a new contract. If he decides to sign a new deal, if decides to change and try something new, but at the moment, Rodri is fully focused on Man City.”
Man City fans want Rodri to sign a new deal at their club as they would love to see the midfielder retire at the Etihad Stadium; however, the Manchester club should wait before making a new offer.
Man City should hold off on a new contract for Rodri
Rodri returned to training with the rest of the Man City squad on Monday after the 29-year-old picked up a minor injury at the FIFA Club World Cup.
More of these little setbacks are likely to occur during the opening phase of the 25/26 season, which is normal after a player has been out of action for so long.
Man City should wait to see how this season goes for Rodri before offering the midfielder a new contract, as it has been seen in the past that many players never return to their previous level after suffering a serious ACL injury.
The Spaniard also turns 30 next year, which is also a factor that should be taken into consideration if the upcoming campaign does not go to plan for the Man City star.
Rodri is expected to return to his former self, but it would not harm the Manchester club to show a little patience before committing to a contract that is likely to be worth a lot of money.
