Speculation surrounding Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City has been rife recently.
During the October international break, Guardiola admitted that he has not decided whether to stay at City beyond this season.
Following the announcement that Hugo Viana will replace Txiki Begiristain as City’s Sporting director in the summer, which is when the Catalan’s contract is set to expire, it was reported that Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim would be a likely replacement for Guardiola if he were to leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the campaign.
However, following the recent sacking of Erik ten Hag from Manchester United, Amorim is reportedly close to replacing the Dutchman at Old Trafford (via Daily Mail).
With that in mind, a journalist has shared some behind-the-scenes details on how City feel about the 39-year-old now that he is being linked with a move to United.

How Man City feel about Ruben Amorim becoming the next Man United manager
In a recent post shared on his official X account, Rob Dawson gave this insight on the matter.
He said: “Understand there’s no concern from Man City’s side that United are in talks with Sporting for Amorim.
“Not considered a top candidate to take over from Guardiola (when he leaves) primarily because his system doesn’t fit with the way City play. Clear run for United on that front.”
Amorim said Viana appointment wouldn’t confirm City move
Since taking charge of the Portuguese club back in March 2020, Amorim has overlooked 227 matches.
Across those games, Sporting have won 161, drawn 33 and lost 33, winning multiple trophies along the way.
This makes it easy to see why he has been mentioned with a move to both Manchester clubs in recent weeks.
The Sporting CP boss already spoke about the possibility of him making a move to the Etihad, saying this about whether Viana’s appointment as City’s next sporting director means that Amorim will be Guardiola’s replacement.
He said: “They are different paths. We just have a professional relationship, which will not last forever. Hugo Viana wants to win more than everyone at Man City.”
With Dawson now highlighting that City have no concerns with United looking to hire Amorim as their new manager due to them deciding that he doesn’t suit the Blues’ ideal style of play, this should put to bed any chance of him replacing Guardiola anytime soon.
