At some point during the 2024/2025 campaign, Pep Guardiola is expected to confirm whether he has decided to leave Manchester City upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season or extended his deal.

It was claimed on Thursday that Pep Guardiola is considering extending his contract at Manchester City by one year to keep him at the club until 2026.

In January, Guardiola revealed he could extend his contract at Manchester City when discussing Jurgen Klopp’s official announcement that confirmed he was leaving Liverpool last season.

However, Guardiola’s decision is yet to be finalised.

The Guardian recently reported that Ruben Amorim is viewed as a possible replacement for Pep Guardiola if he departs Manchester City in 2025.

It was reported on Wednesday that Amorim would be keen to replace Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City identify Xabi Alonso as Ruben Amorim alternative to succeed Pep Guardiola

Recently, Pep Guardiola confirmed he has not decided his future at Manchester City yet.

In 2022, Guardiola endorsed Amorim as one of the world’s best managers after City thrashed his Sporting CP side 5-0 in the Champions League.

According to a report by The Athletic, apart from Ruben Amorim, Xabi Alonso has also been mentioned in conversations within the Manchester City hierarchy — who look to be lining up replacements for Pep Guardiola in case he leaves the club next year — who is expected to decide his future in the coming weeks.

It is believed that people who know Hugo Viana, who will replace Txiki Begiristain as City’s sporting director as well as Amorim are “convinced” that the former would like to bring his colleague at Sporting and former teammate to the club — a prospect that interests the decision-makers at the Etihad Stadium as well.

However, Alonso still remains “of interest” to City.

Keeping both managers aside, the club’s ideal scenario remains that the legendary coach puts pen to paper — with Manchester City willing to offer Pep Guardiola a rolling contract — as per a report on Wednesday.

Bayer Leverkusen CEO confirmed Alonso will manage Real Madrid one day

However, City’s plans to appoint Xabi Alonso could be far from an easy process.

In April, Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro revealed that in his view, Alonso will eventually manage Real Madrid in the future.

Speaking to Cadena SER, Carro stated: “I have no doubt that Xabi Alonso will coach Real Madrid at some point. What I am not clear about is when but that he will end up at Real Madrid, I have no doubt, as it is also possible that he trains Liverpool or Bayern.”

“There are a lot of clubs interested, that’s how it is, which doesn’t mean that in the future he can’t coach some of the clubs mentioned, especially his former teams as a player. But he feels comfortable here, otherwise he wouldn’t continue. We will maintain our ambition to play in the Champions League next year.”

With Fernando Carro also mentioning the Spanish tactician’s former clubs in Liverpool and Bayern Munich as possible destinations for Xabi Alonso one day, Manchester City will have to fend off competition from the biggest and best clubs in the world if they wish to appoint him.

The Leverkusen boss is one of the most sought-after managers in the world — leading his club to an unbeaten Bundesliga title as his team lost only game in all competitions last season.

However, Manchester City need not be worried about their chances of landing Xabi Alonso if Pep Guardiola confirms to them that he intends to stay put at the club.
