Nedum Onuoha claims Pep Guardiola will make a ‘selfless’ decision about his Man City future

Manchester City are currently on the hunt to add more titles to their cabinet.

Having become the first team to win four Premier League trophies in a row last season, City have now started their 2024/25 season in a strong fashion.

However, this season may end up being Pep Guardiola’s final one at the Etihad Stadium, with his contract set to expire in June.

During the October international break, Guardiola admitted that he had not made a decision about his City future.

In fact, it was claimed that Guardiola constantly changes his mind over whether to sign a contract extension at City or not.

With the domestic season now having resumed, a pundit and former City player has shared a claim about the Catalan’s future at the Manchester club.

Nedum Onuoha addresses Pep Guardiola’s future at Man City

Appearing in a recent edition of No Tippy Tappy Football, Nedum Onuoha was asked if he expects to see Guardiola extend his contract and keep his role at City for next season.

In response, the former City defender said this.

He said: “I don’t expect him to stay, I’d love for him to stay though. He’s been remarkable but he can’t do the job forever.

“He’ll want to leave the club in a good place for the long term where he’ll be helping pick the successor. He’ll know who he thinks is best to work in the environment that is needed at City to be successful going forward.

“He knows it better than anybody else. So I wouldn’t necessarily think that he’s going to go out in a way where it’s just about him getting what he wants.

“He’s selfless enough given the fact that his identity is all over the football club, to know what it needs to continue to be successful, because for as much as he’s a man from Catalonia you know he’s a Barca boy through and through, he’s also half blue Mancunian now.

“So I think he’ll try and find the best way to exit while also allowing the club to continue to strive.

“When he first came in people said you can’t play tiki-taka football here, it’s not going to work, and in the years that he’s been there he hasn’t played that type of football.

“He’s evolved himself and the Premier League’s evolved, and you can even make a case that English football has evolved due to his presence.

“If he does decide to leave to go and do something else, myself and probably hundreds of thousands of others would carry him on our shoulders because he’s been amazing, he’s given us some of the best times of our lives you could say supporting Manchester City.”

City could offer Guardiola special deal to keep him at the Etihad

Following the recent speculation over the 53-year-old’s future, it was reported that City may look to offer Guardiola a rolling one-year contract where he has the power to extend by a year at a time if he sees fit.

With 485 matches under his belt as City’s manager, the Catalan has seen his side win 359, draw 60 and lose 66.

Taking that into account, regardless of Onuoha’s prediction that Guardiola will end his time at City this summer, the best thing for the supporters would be to see the manager put pen to paper on an extension sooner rather than later so the speculation around his future can quieten down.
