Despite being five points off Premier League leaders Liverpool and placed 10th in the league phase of Champions League, Manchester City must be in dreamland as Pep Guardiola has reportedly agreed to extend his contract until 2026.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester City were “always confident” about Guardiola’s future being resolved and as a result, they did not contact managers like Ruben Amorim, Xabi Alonso or any other coach as a plan B in case he decided to leave.

Guardiola could end up as fourth longest serving manager in Premier League history

Manchester City will still consider themselves as one of the strongest contenders to win the Premier League and the Champions League despite being placed second and 10th in both competitions respectively.

While Guardiola guaranteed City will win the FA Cup after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the final last season.

As far as Pep Guardiola’s longevity as Manchester City boss is concerned, he will end up as the third longest-serving manager to have ever graced the Premier League after his contract expires.

The two-time treble-winner will become only the fourth manager in Premier League history to manage a single club for a decade after Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes at Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton respectively.

Pep Guardiola’s reaction to Jurgen Klopp’s exit from Liverpool in January was to hint that he could extend his contract at City; a manager that he could surpass in terms of years spent in the Premier League at the end of the season.

Guardiola could match Moyes in terms of spending 11 years at Manchester City if he exercises the option of extending his current deal by an additional year.

But as things stand, Pep Guardiola still ranks behind the former Toffees boss.

Guardiola hinted at new contract after Man City’s loss to Sporting

While his latest reported contract extension will come as a surprise to many, Guardiola discussed his future at Manchester City jokingly when asked about managing Brazil after his side’s 4-1 defeat against Sporting CP.

“After losing 4-1, I am no longer an option for Brazil.”

Pep Guardiola made his intentions clear, saying: “More than ever, I want to lift up the team and return them to their top level.”

After the Spaniard’s spell at City comes to an end, his tenure will be remembered as one that sets the benchmark for other managers to attain success while managing a club in the long run.

Pep Guardiola’s knack for keeping a team hungry, rebuilding their squad a number of times while managing through different eras is a gift that Sir Alex Ferguson also possessed at Manchester United.

Whether Guardiola aims to rival Ferguson as well as Arsene Wenger in terms of how long he maintains his love affair with Manchester City will be interesting to see unfold.
