Manchester City have decided to send Sverre Nypan on loan to the Championship to play with Middlesbrough for the 2025/26 campaign.
City completed the signing of Nypan from Rosenborg in July, and the plan for the midfielder was always to send the 18-year-old on loan to gain some experience in a division higher than the Eliteserien.
Nypan’s father stated that the goal for his son was to find him a team somewhere in the middle ground of the Norwegian league and the Premier League, as many clubs around Europe were interested in the youngster.

Man City think Middlesbrough are good preparation for Sverre Nypan before playing in the Premier League
Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday night that Middlesbrough are closing in on a loan deal for Nypan, who Man City wanted to remain in England, despite interest from clubs playing in higher divisions.
The 18-year-old is believed to be happy about the move and will join up with Rob Edwards’ squad once the transfer is finalised in the coming days.
According to Manchester Evening News, Man City view a move to the second tier of English football for Nypan as good preparation as they look to develop the midfielder into a top Premier League player.
Playing in the Championship will introduce the Norwegian to the physicality of English football, which the youngster may not have experienced had he made a move to La Liga, for example.
Pep Guardiola views Nypan as a first-team player, and if things go right for the midfielder at Middlesbrough, the 18-year-old could work his way into the plans of the legendary coach ahead of the 2026/27 season.
What other clubs wanted Sverre Nypan
Loan deals to higher leagues than the Championship were on the cards for Nypan, as the likes of Girona and Lyon wanted the Norwegian talent for the upcoming season.
Ajax also had an interest in Nypan, but once Man City made the decision to keep their new signing in England, all these moves were off the table.
Nypan’s academy manager at Rosenborg recently stated that the 18-year-old is a special talent. Man City fans will be able to get a glimpse of this at Middlesbrough, and they will hope the move to the Championship is the start of a legendary career in England for the Norwegian youngster.
